DATA STORY: India reports 400,000+ Covid cases for 3rd straight day, over 4,000 deaths

India has so far administered 167,346,544 vaccine doses. That is 793.96 per cent of its total caseload, and 12.03 per cent of its population

India on Saturday reported a net increase of 78,282 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 3,723,446. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 20.24 per cent (one in 5). The country is second among the most affected countries by active cases. On Saturday, it added 401,078 cases, the most added by any country in a day, to take its total caseload to 21,892,676. And, with 4,187 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 238,270, or 1.09 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
With 2,297,257 more Covid-19 vaccine doses being administered on Friday, India’s total count of vaccine shots so far reached 167,346,544. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 17,930,960 – or 81.90 per cent of total caseload – with 318,609 new cured cases being reported on Saturday.
 
  • With a daily increase of 401,078 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 21,491,598 on Friday to 21,892,676 – an increase of 1.9%. Death toll has reached 238,270, with 4,198 fatalities, the most in a day yet. Now the second-most-affected country by active cases, total cases and recovery, and fourth by death, India has added 2,727,707 cases in the past 7 days.
  • India now accounts for 20.24% of all active cases globally (one in every 5 active cases), and 7.12% of all deaths (one in every 14 deaths).
  • India has so far administered 167,346,544 vaccine doses. That is 793.96 per cent of its total caseload, and 12.03 per cent of its population.
  • Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (22361556), Rajasthan (18595974), Uttar Pradesh (18124687), Gujarat (17560359), and West Bengal (15910167).
  • Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Kerala (291674), Gujarat (274929), Delhi (256645), Uttarakhand (254641), and Chhattisgarh (244572).

  • The count of active cases across India on Saturday saw a net increase of 78282, compared with 78766 on Friday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Karnataka (19566), Maharashtra (15738), Kerala (11744), Madhya Pradesh (6809), and Uttarakhand (4780).
  • With 318609 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 81.90%, while fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.09%.
  • The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.39%), Sikkim (1.69%), and Himachal Pradesh (1.49%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 322,796 — 4,187 deaths and 318,609 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.30%.
  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 1.9%.
  • India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 37.5 days, and for deaths at 39.1 days.
  • Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (54022), Karnataka (48781), Kerala (38460), Uttar Pradesh (27763), and Tamil Nadu (26465).
  • Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Uttarakhand (69.08%), Karnataka (69.85%), Goa (70.41%), Rajasthan (71.63%), and Himachal Pradesh (74.53%).
  • India on Friday conducted 1,808,414 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 300,410,043. The test positivity rate recorded was 22.2%.
  • Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Maharashtra (17.27%), Goa (16.1%), Dadra & Nagar Haveli-Daman & Diu (11.87%), Chandigarh (11.26%), and Chhattisgarh (10.91%).
  • Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Goa (51.35%), Nagaland (46.26%), Sikkim (33.21%), Karnataka (30.7%), and West Bengal (29.77%).
  • Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (944749), J&K (555452), Kerala (469498), Karnataka (395406), and Uttarakhand (354744).
  • The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (4996758), Karnataka (1838885), Kerala (1824856), Uttar Pradesh (1453679), and Tamil Nadu (1323965).
  • Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 54,022 new cases to take its tally to 4996758. The state has added 586,673 cases in the past 10 days.
  • Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 48,781 cases to take its tally to 1838885.
  • Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 38,460 cases to take its tally to 1824856.
  • Uttar Pradesh has added 27,763 cases to take its tally to 1453679.
  • Tamil Nadu has added 26,465 cases to take its tally to 1323965.
  • Delhi has added 19,832 cases to take its tally to 1292867.
  • Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 17,188 to 1245374.
