DATA STORY: India reports biggest single-day surge in Covid caseload since Jan 29

India on Saturday reported a net increase of 3,985 to take its count of active coronavirus cases to 180,304. That is a level seen on June 24, 2020, and then again on January 25, 2021, and that is 82.28 per cent lower than the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 0.83 per cent (one in 120). The country is 13^th among the most affected countries by active cases. On Thursday, it added 18,327 cases, the most in a day since January 29, to take its total caseload to 11,192,088. And, with 08 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 157,656, or 1.41 per cent of total confirmed infections.

 
With 1,492,201 more people getting Covid-19 vaccine shots on Friday, India’s total count of those inoculated reached 19,497,704. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 10,854,128 – or 96.98 per cent of total caseload – with 14,234 new cured cases being reported on Saturday.
 

• With a daily increase of 18,327 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 11,173,761 on Friday to 11,192,088 – an increase of 0.2%. Death toll has reached 157,656, with 109 fatalities in a day. Now the thirteenth-most-affected country by active cases, fourth by fatality, and second by total and recovered cases, India has added 112,109 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 0.83% of all active cases globally (one in every 120 active cases), and 6.08% of all deaths (one in every 16 deaths).
• India has so far vaccinated 19,497,704 people. That is 174.21 per cent of its total caseload, and 1.4036 per cent of its population.
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 69 days.
• The count of active cases across India saw a net increase of 3,985 on Saturday, compared with 2,906 on Friday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Maharashtra (3696), Punjab (397), Karnataka (246), Madhya Pradesh (149), and Gujarat (109).
• With 14,234 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 96.98%, while fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.41%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (3.17%), Maharashtra (2.38%), and Gujarat (2.19%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 14,342 — 108 deaths and 14,234 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 0.75%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.1%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 423.0 days, and for deaths at 1,011.5 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (10216), Kerala (2776), Punjab (808), Karnataka (677), and Tamil Nadu (543).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Punjab (93.25%), Maharashtra (93.52%), Kerala (95.51%), Madhya Pradesh (97.22%), and Gujarat (97.33%).
• India on Friday conducted 751,935 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 220,692,677. The test positivity rate recorded was 2.4%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (13.17%), Goa (11.04%), Nagaland (9.29%), Kerala (9.1%), and Ladakh (8.93%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Maharashtra (11.28%), Lakshadweep (4.99%), Goa (4.92%), Chandigarh (4.22%), and Kerala (4.2%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (640024), J&K (404216), Kerala (335350), Karnataka (290995), and Andhra Pradesh (270847).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (1072436), Kerala (1072436), Karnataka (953813), Andhra Pradesh (890441), and Tamil Nadu (853992).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 10,216 new cases to take its tally to 2198399. The state has added 86,087 cases in the past 10 days.
• Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 2776 cases to take its tally to 1072436.
• Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 677 cases to take its tally to 953813.
• Andhra Pradesh has added 124 cases to take its tally to 890441.
• Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 543 to 853992.
• Delhi has added 312 cases to take its tally to 640494.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 127 cases to take its tally to 604034.
