DATA STORY: India reports net increase in active Covid cases for a third straight day

With 21,437 more vaccine shots being administered on Saturday, the total number of people inoculated in India has reached 8,285,295 - that is 75.90% of its total caseload, and 0.5967% of population

India on Monday reported a net increase of 2,070 – a third daily net increase in as many days – to take its count of active coronavirus cases to 139,637, which is 86.38 per cent lower than the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 0.54 per cent (one in 185). The country is 17^th among the most affected countries by active cases. India added 11,649 cases to take its total caseload to 10,916,589. And, with 90 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 155,732, or 1.43 per cent of total confirmed infections.

 
With 21,437 more vaccinations across India on Sunday, the total count of those inoculated reached 8,285,295. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 10,621,220 – or 97.29 per cent of total caseload – with 9,489 new cured cases being reported on Monday.
 

• With a daily increase of 11,649 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 10,904,940 on Sunday to 10,916,589 – an increase of 0.1%. Death toll has reached 155,732, with 90 fatalities in a day. Now the seventeenth-most-affected country by active cases, fourth by fatality, and second by total and recovered cases, India has added 78,395 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 0.55% of all active cases globally (one in every 182 active cases), and 6.46% of all deaths (one in every 15 deaths).
• India has so far vaccinated 8,285,295 people. That is 75.90 per cent of its total caseload, and 0.5967 per cent of its population.
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 62 days.
• The count of active cases across India saw a net increase of 2070 on Monday, compared with 996 on Sunday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Maharashtra (2697), Uttarakhand (50), Punjab (25), Madhya Pradesh (13), and Jharkhand (9).
• With 9,489 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate has declined marginally to 97.29%, while fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.43%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (3.23%), Maharashtra (2.50%), and Gujarat (2.21%). The rate in as many as 14 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 9,579 — 90 deaths and 9,489 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 0.94%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.1%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 649.2 days, and for deaths at 1,199.0 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Kerala (4612), Maharashtra (4092), Tamil Nadu (470), Karnataka (414), and Gujarat (247).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Kerala (93.25%), Punjab (95.43%), Maharashtra (95.70%), West Bengal (97.50%), and Uttarakhand (97.56%).
• India on Sunday conducted 486,122 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 206,716,634. The test positivity rate recorded was 2.4%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (13.47%), Goa (11.48%), Nagaland (9.51%), Kerala (9.48%), and Chandigarh (9.07%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Maharashtra (8.39%), Kerala (7.46%), Goa (3.95%), Nagaland (3.31%), and Chandigarh (1.8%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (583875), J&K (367085), Kerala (301440), Karnataka (272896), and Andhra Pradesh (259402).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (2064278), Kerala (1004135), Karnataka (945270), Andhra Pradesh (888869), and Tamil Nadu (845120).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 4,092 new cases to take its tally to 2064278. The state has added 28,276 cases in the past 10 days.
• Kerala, now the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 4612 cases to take its tally to 1004135.
• Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 414 cases to take its tally to 945270.
• Andhra Pradesh has added 55 cases to take its tally to 888869.
• Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 470 to 845120.
• Delhi has added 150 cases to take its tally to 636946.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 101 cases to take its tally to 602190.
