DATA STORY: India's active cases drop below 1.6 mn; deaths rise by 3,380

India on Saturday reported a net reduction of 80,745 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 1,555,248. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 11.70 per cent (one in 8). The country is second among the most affected countries by active cases. On Saturday, it added 120,529 cases to take its total caseload to 28,694,879. And, with 3,380 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 344,082, or 1.20 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
With 3,650,080 more Covid-19 vaccine doses being administered on Saturday, India’s total count of vaccine shots so far reached 227,860,317. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 26,795,549 – or 93.38 per cent of total caseload – with 197,894 new cured cases being reported on Saturday.
 
  • With a daily increase of 120,529 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 28,574,350 on Saturday to 28,694,879– an increase of 0.4%. Death toll has reached 344,082, with 3,380 fatalities. Now the second-most-affected country by active cases, total cases and recovery, and third by death, India has added 965,632 cases in the past 7 days.
  • India now accounts for 11.70% of all active cases globally (one in every 8 active cases), and 9.14% of all deaths (one in every 11 deaths).
  • India has so far administered 227,860,317 vaccine doses. That is 794.08 per cent of its total caseload, and 16.36 per cent of its population.
  • Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (28412160), Uttar Pradesh (24691902), Rajasthan (22233377), Gujarat (21878594), and West Bengal (19844788).
  • Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Delhi (354183), Kerala (353296), Gujarat (342536), Uttarakhand (316027), and J&K (300539).
  • Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 8 days.
  • The count of active cases across India on Saturday saw a net reduction of 80,745, compared with 77,420 on Friday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Assam (231), Manipur (185), Sikkim (66), Tripura (27), and Mizoram (18).
  • With 197,894 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 93.38%, while fatality rate has increased marginally to 1.20%.
  • The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.59%), Uttarakhand (1.99%), and Nagaland (1.86%). The rate in as many as 18 is higher than the national average.
  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 201,274 — 3,380 deaths and 197,894 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.67%.
  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.5%.
  • India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 164.7 days, and for deaths at 70.2 days.
  • Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Tamil Nadu (22651), Kerala (16229), Karnataka (16068), Maharashtra (14152), and Andhra Pradesh (10413).
  • Among states with more than 100,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Tamil Nadu (86.56%), Karnataka (88.35%), Andhra Pradesh (91.66%), Kerala (92.91%), and Maharashtra (94.86%).
  • India on Saturday conducted 2,084,421 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 361,174,142. The test positivity rate recorded was 5.8%.
  • Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Goa (18.89%), Maharashtra (16.11%), Dadra & Nagar Haveli-Daman & Diu (14.33%), Kerala (12.82%), and Sikkim (12.65%).
  • Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Kerala (14.82%), Meghalaya (14.34%), Goa (14.1%), Tamil Nadu (12.94%), and Nagaland (12.66%).
  • Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (1047718), J&K (642849), Kerala (568313), Karnataka (448471), and Uttarakhand (436694).
  • The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (5805565), Karnataka (2669514), Kerala (2601082), Tamil Nadu (2195402), and Andhra Pradesh (1738990).
  • Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 14,152 new cases to take its tally to 5,805,551. The state has added 179,410 cases in the past 10 days.
  • Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 16,068 cases to take its tally to 2,669,508.
  • Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 16,229 cases to take its tally to 2,601,063.
  • Tamil Nadu has added 22,651 cases to take its tally to 2195401.
  • Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 10,413 to 1738989.
  • Uttar Pradesh has added 1,283 cases to take its tally to 1693992.
  • Delhi has added 523 cases to take its tally to 1428442.
