DATA STORY: India's active Covid cases down 72% from peak at 283,849

India on Thursday reported a net reduction of 5,391 to bring its count of active coronavirus cases down to 283,849, the lowest since July 11 and 72 per cent lower than the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. With a continuous trend of daily reductions, India’s share of global active coronavirus cases is down at 1.31 per cent (one in 76). The country added 24,712 cases to take its total caseload to 10,123,778. And with 312 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 146,756, or 1.45 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India now stands at 9,693,173 – or 95.75 per cent of total caseload – with 29,791 new cured cases being reported on Tuesday.

 

• With a daily increase of 24,712 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 10,099,066 on Wednesday to 10,123,778 – an increase of 0.2%. Death toll has reached 146,756, with 312 fatalities in a day. The ninth-most-affected country by active cases, third by fatality, and second by total and recovered cases, India has added 167,221 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 1.31% of all active cases globally (one in every 76 active cases), and 8.45% of all deaths (one in every 12 deaths).
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 32 days.
• The count of active cases across India has seen a net decline of 5391, compared with 3278 on Wednesday. The states that have reported the highest net increase in active cases are Kerala (1339), Bihar (378), Telangana (188), Odisha (57), and Goa (53).
• With 29,791 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate has improved to 95.75%; the fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.45%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (3.19%), Maharashtra (2.57%), and Gujarat (2.22%). The rate in as many as 13 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 30,103 — 312 deaths and 29,791 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.04%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.2%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 283.6 days, and for deaths at 325.7 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Kerala (6169), Maharashtra (3913), West Bengal (1628), Chhattisgarh (1337), and Tamil Nadu (1066).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Himachal Pradesh (89.66%), Kerala (90.87%), Uttarakhand (92.09%), Chhattisgarh (93.04%), and Manipur (93.54%).
• India on Wednesday conducted 1,039,645 coronavirus tests, taking the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 165,308,366. The test positivity rate recorded was 2.4%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (15.61%), Goa (13.03%), Chandigarh (11.18%), Nagaland (9.96%), and Kerala (9.61%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Kerala (10.04%), Goa (6.97%), Chandigarh (5.33%), Chhattisgarh (4.15%), and Himachal Pradesh (4.05%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (405423), J&K (273393), Andhra Pradesh (218595), Kerala (213765), and Karnataka (202393).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (1906371), Karnataka (912340), Andhra Pradesh (879718), Tamil Nadu (810080), and Kerala (721510).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 3,913 new cases to take its tally to 1906371. The state has added 25,955 cases in the past 10 days.
• Karnataka, the second-most-affected state, has reported 958 cases to take its tally to 912340.
• Andhra Pradesh, the third-most-affected state by total cases, added 379 cases to take its tally to 879718.
• Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 1,066 to 810080.
• Kerala has added 6169 cases to take its tally to 721510.
• Delhi has added 871 cases to take its tally to 619618.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 810 cases to take its tally to 577642.
