DATA STORY: India's active Covid cases down 73% from peak, now at 1.26% of global count

India on Monday reported a net reduction of 1389 to bring its count of active coronavirus cases down to 277,301, the lowest since July 10 and 72.75 per cent lower than the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. With a continuous trend of daily reductions, India’s share of global active coronavirus cases is down at 1.26 per cent (one in 79). The country added 20,021 cases, to take its total caseload to 10,207,871. And, with 279 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 147,901, or 1.45 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India now stands at 9,782,669 – or 95.83 per cent of total caseload – with 21,131 new cured cases being reported on Monday.

 

• With a daily increase of 20,021 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen 10,187,850 on Sunday to 10,207,871 – an increase of 0.2%. Death toll has reached 147,901, with 279 fatalities in a day. Now the tenth-most-affected country by active cases, third by fatality, and second by total and recovered cases, India has added 152,311 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 1.26% of all active cases globally (one in every 79 active cases), and 8.35% of all deaths (one in every 12 deaths).
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 34 days.
• The count of active cases across India has seen a net decline of 1,389, compared with 2,977 on Saturday. The states that have reported the highest net increase in active cases are Kerala (1417), Maharashtra (1124), Uttarakhand (181), Sikkim (30), and Chandigarh (7).
• With 21,131 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate has improved to 95.83%; the fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.45%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (3.20%), Maharashtra (2.57%), and Gujarat (2.14%). The rate in as many as 13 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 21,410 — 279 deaths and 21,131 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.30%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.2%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 353.1 days, and for deaths at 367.1 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Kerala (4905), Maharashtra (3314), West Bengal (1435), Tamil Nadu (1009), and Madhya Pradesh (946).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Kerala (90.77%), Himachal Pradesh (91.27%), Uttarakhand (92.07%), Chhattisgarh (93.82%), and Gujarat (93.91%).
• India on Sunday conducted 715,397 coronavirus tests, taking the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 168,818,054. The test positivity rate recorded was 2.8%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (15.35%), Goa (12.91%), Chandigarh (11.05%), Nagaland (9.94%), and Kerala (9.62%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Sikkim (22.66%), Kerala (10.64%), Chandigarh (8.68%), Maharashtra (6.54%), and Goa (5.42%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (421472), J&K (281518), Andhra Pradesh (222525), Kerala (219078), and Karnataka (208285).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (1919550), Karnataka (916256), Andhra Pradesh (881061), Tamil Nadu (814170), and Kerala (740516).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 3,314 new cases to take its tally to 1919550. The state has added 32,743 cases in the past 10 days.
• Karnataka, the second-most-affected state, has reported 911 cases to take its tally to 916256.
• Andhra Pradesh, the third-most-affected state by total cases, added 349 cases to take its tally to 881061.
• Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 1,009 to 814170.
• Kerala has added 4,905 cases to take its tally to 740516.
• Delhi has added 757 cases to take its tally to 622851.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 900 cases to take its tally to 581980.
