DATA STORY: India's active Covid cases now under 1.7 mn, deaths at 340,702

India on Friday reported a net reduction of 77,420 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 1,635,993. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 12.30 per cent (one in 8). The country is second among the most affected countries by active cases. On Friday, it added 132,364 cases to take its total caseload to 28,574,350. And, with 2,713 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 340,702, or 1.19 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
With 2,875,286 more Covid-19 vaccine doses being administered on Thursday, India’s total count of vaccine shots has so far reached 224,109,448. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 26,597,655 – or 93.08 per cent of total caseload – with 207,071 new cured cases being reported on Friday.

 

• With a daily increase of 132,364 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 28,441,986 on Thursday to 28,574,350 – an increase of 0.5%. Death toll has reached 340,702, with 2,713 fatalities. Now the second-most-affected country by active cases, total cases and recovery, and third by death, India has added 1,018,893 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 12.30% of all active cases globally (one in every 8 active cases), and 9.09% of all deaths (one in every 11 deaths).
• India has so far administered 224,109,448 vaccine doses. That is 782.90 per cent of its total caseload, and 16.09 per cent of its population.
• Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (28036096), Uttar Pradesh (24284857), Rajasthan (22085617), Gujarat (21613373), and West Bengal (19551146).
• Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Delhi (352005), Kerala (348380), Gujarat (338384), Uttarakhand (313761), and J&K (298299).
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 7 days.
• The count of active cases across India on Friday saw a net reduction of 77,420, compared with 80,232 on Thursday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Jharkhand (230), Mizoram (95), Sikkim (81), and Arunachal (26).
• With 207,071 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 93.08%, while fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.19%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.58%), Uttarakhand (1.98%), and Nagaland (1.82%). The rate in as many as 18 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 209,784 — 2,713 deaths and 207,071 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.29%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.5%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 149.3 days, and for deaths at 86.7 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Tamil Nadu (24405), Kerala (18853), Karnataka (18324), Maharashtra (15229), and Andhra Pradesh (11421).
• Among states with more than 100,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Tamil Nadu (85.91%), Assam (86.94%), Karnataka (88.04%), J&K (88.29%), and Puducherry (89.17%).
• India on Thursday conducted 2,075,428 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 357,433,846. The test positivity rate recorded was 6.4%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Goa (18.91%), Maharashtra (16.19%), Dadra & Nagar Haveli-Daman & Diu (14.29%), Kerala (12.81%), and Sikkim (12.77%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Goa (17.17%), Sikkim (16.83%), Kerala (15.22%), Tamil Nadu (13.6%), and Andhra Pradesh (13.25%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (1043593), J&K (639218), Kerala (565245), Karnataka (446242), and Uttarakhand (434309).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (5791413), Karnataka (2653446), Kerala (2584853), Tamil Nadu (2172751), and Andhra Pradesh (1728577).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 15,229 new cases to take its tally to 5791413. The state has added 189,394 cases in the past 10 days.
• Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 18,324 cases to take its tally to 2653446.
• Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 18,853 cases to take its tally to 2584853.
• Tamil Nadu has added 24,405 cases to take its tally to 2172751.
• Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 11,421 to 1728577.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 1,220 cases to take its tally to 1695212.
• Delhi has added 487 cases to take its tally to 1427926.
