DATA STORY: India's active Covid cases now over 53% of September 2020 peak level

India on Tuesday reported a net increase of 18,912 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 540,720. That is a little over 53 per cent of the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 2.46 per cent (one in 41). The country is 6th among the most affected countries by active cases. On Tuesday, it added 56,211 cases to take its total caseload to 12,095,855. And, with 271 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 162,114, or 1.34 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
With 582,919 more people getting Covid-19 vaccine shots on Monday, India’s total count of those inoculated reached 61,113,354. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 11,393,021 – or 94.19 per cent of total caseload – with 37,028 new cured cases being reported on Tuesday.
 
  • With a daily increase of 56,211 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 12,039,644 on Monday to 12,095,855 – an increase of 0.5%. Death toll has reached 162,114, with 271 fatalities in a day. Now the sixth-most-affected country by active cases, fourth by fatality, third by total, and second by recovered cases, India has added 409,059 cases in the past 7 days.
  • India now accounts for 2.46% of all active cases globally (one in every 41 active cases), and 5.78% of all deaths (one in every 17 deaths).
  • India has so far vaccinated 61,113,354 people. That is 505.26 per cent of its total caseload, and 4.3965 per cent of its population.
  • Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (10490439), Rajasthan (10237168), Uttar Pradesh (9957235), Gujarat (9204545), and West Bengal (8990943).
  • Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 31 days.
  • The count of active cases across India saw a net increase of 18,912 on Tuesday, the most in a day so far, compared with 35,498 on Monday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Maharashtra (10687), Uttar Pradesh (977), Madhya Pradesh (965), Chhattisgarh (942), and Tamil Nadu (913).
  • With 37,028 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 94.19%, while fatality rate has come down marginally to 1.34%.
  • The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.88%), Sikkim (2.17%), and Maharashtra (1.98%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 37,299 — 271 deaths and 37,028 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 0.73%.
  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.5%.
  • India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 148.8 days, and for deaths at 414.3 days.
  • Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (31643), Punjab (2868), Karnataka (2792), Madhya Pradesh (2323), and Tamil Nadu (2279).
  • Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Maharashtra (85.71%), Punjab (86.83%), Chandigarh (88.20%), Chhattisgarh (92.89%), and Madhya Pradesh (93.43%).
  • India on Monday conducted 785,864 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 242,650,025. The test positivity rate recorded was 7.2%.
  • Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Maharashtra (14.08%), Goa (10.67%), Ladakh (9.09%), Nagaland (9%), and Chandigarh (8.59%).
  • Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Maharashtra (23.12%), Chhattisgarh (17.18%), Chandigarh (14.66%), Punjab (12.71%), and Himachal Pradesh (11.87%).
  • Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (730384), J&K (452933), Kerala (371555), Karnataka (322134), and Andhra Pradesh (287650).
  • The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (2745518), Kerala (1119542), Karnataka (989804), Andhra Pradesh (899812), and Tamil Nadu (881752).
  • Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 31,643 new cases to take its tally to 2745518. The state has added 323,497 cases in the past 10 days.
  • Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 1,549 cases to take its tally to 1119542.
  • Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 2792 cases to take its tally to 989804.
  • Andhra Pradesh has added 997 cases to take its tally to 899812.
  • Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 2279 to 881752.
  • Delhi has added 1901 cases to take its tally to 659616.
  • Uttar Pradesh has added 1280 cases to take its tally to 615078.
