DATA STORY: India's Covid tally tops 20 mn, over 320,000 recover in a day

India has so far administered 158,932,921 vaccine doses. That is 797.63 per cent of its total caseload, and 11.42 per cent of its population

India on Tuesday reported a net increase of 33,491 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 3,447,133. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 18.53 per cent (one in 5). The country is second among the most affected countries by active cases. On Tuesday, it added 357,229 cases to take its total caseload to 20,282,833. And, with 3,449 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 222,408, or 1.10 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
With 1,708,390 more Covid-19 vaccine doses being administered on Monday, India’s total count of vaccine shots so far reached 158,932,921. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 16,613,292 – or 81.91 per cent of total caseload – with 320,289 new cured cases being reported on Tuesday.
 
  • With a daily increase of 357,229 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 19,557,457 on Monday to 20,282,833 – an increase of 1.8%. Death toll has reached 222,408, with 3,449 fatalities. Now the second-most-affected country by active cases, total cases and recovery, and fourth by death, India has added 2,646,526 cases in the past 7 days.
  • India now accounts for 18.53% of all active cases globally (one in every 5 active cases), and 6.78% of all deaths (one in every 16 deaths).

  • Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (21165989), Rajasthan (18092377), Uttar Pradesh (17519010), Gujarat (16904283), and West Bengal (15367302).
  • Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Kerala (281993), Gujarat (264657), Chhattisgarh (240758), Uttarakhand (238915), and Delhi (237734).

  • The count of active cases across India on Tuesday saw a net increase of 33491, compared with 63998 on Monday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Karnataka (23298), Andhra Pradesh (8674), Kerala (6447), Rajasthan (5193), and Tamil Nadu (2814).
  • With 320289 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 81.91%, while fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.10%.
  • The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.42%), Sikkim (1.77%), and Himachal Pradesh (1.50%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 323,738 — 3,449 deaths and 320289 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.07%.
  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 2.0%.
  • India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 39.0 days, and for deaths at 44.3 days.
  • Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (48621), Karnataka (44438), Uttar Pradesh (29052), Kerala (26011), and Tamil Nadu (20952).
  • Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Rajasthan (69.43%), Uttarakhand (70.38%), Karnataka (72.00%), Gujarat (74.46%), and Jharkhand (75.04%).
  • India on Monday conducted 1,663,742 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 293,310,779. The test positivity rate recorded was 21.5%.
  • Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Maharashtra (17.12%), Goa (14.65%), Dadra & Nagar Haveli-Daman & Diu (11.06%), Chandigarh (10.85%), and Chhattisgarh (10.47%).
  • Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Goa (44.95%), Rajasthan (35.44%), West Bengal (31.65%), Himachal Pradesh (30.9%), and Karnataka (29.81%).
  • Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (928047), J&K (542417), Kerala (452526), Karnataka (386048), and Uttarakhand (344390).
  • The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (4771022), Kerala (1664789), Karnataka (1646303), Uttar Pradesh (1342413), and Tamil Nadu (1228064).
  • Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 48,621 new cases to take its tally to 4771022. The state has added 609,346 cases in the past 10 days.
  • Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 26,011 cases to take its tally to 1664789.
  • Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 44,438 cases to take its tally to 1646303.
  • Uttar Pradesh has added 29,052 cases to take its tally to 1342413.
  • Tamil Nadu has added 20,952 cases to take its tally to 1228064.
  • Delhi has added 18,043 cases to take its tally to 1212989.
  • Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 18,972 to 1163994.
