DATA STORY: India's Covid vaccination goes past 200 mn doses; 14.5% jabbed

India on Wednesday reported a net reduction of 91,191 in active coronavirus cases to take its count to 2,495,591. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 16.77 per cent (one in 5). The country is second among the most affected countries by active cases. On Wednesday, it added 208,921 cases to take its total caseload to 27,157,795. And, with 4,157 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 311,388, or 1.15 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 
With 2,039,087 more Covid-19 vaccine doses being administered on Tuesday, India’s total count of vaccine shots so far reached 200,662,456. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 24,350,816 – or 89.66 per cent of total caseload – with 295,955 new cured cases being reported on Wednesday.
 
  • With a daily increase of 208,921 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 26,948,874 on Tuesday to 27,157,795 – an increase of 0.8%. Death toll has reached 311,388, with 4,157 fatalities. Now the second-most-affected country by active cases, total cases and recovery, and third by death, India has added 1,661,465 cases in the past 7 days.
  • India now accounts for 16.77% of all active cases globally (one in every 6 active cases), and 8.78% of all deaths (one in every 12 deaths).
  • India has so far administered 200,662,456 vaccine doses. That is 770.82 per cent of its total caseload, and 14.42 per cent of its population.
  • Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (25956270), Uttar Pradesh (21470041), Rajasthan (21037404), Gujarat (19851538), and West Bengal (17610425).
  • Among states with more than 10 million population, the top 5 in number of vaccine shots per one million population are Delhi (332696), Kerala (318024), Gujarat (310800), Uttarakhand (301933), and Chhattisgarh (283093).

  • The count of active cases across India on Wednesday saw a net reduction of 91,191, compared with 133,934 on Monday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Tamil Nadu (5072), Assam (892), Manipur (341), Arunachal Pradesh (196), and Sikkim (186).
  • With 295,955 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 89.66%, while fatality rate has increased marginally to 1.15%.
  • The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.49%), Uttarakhand (1.89%), and Sikkim (1.75%). The rate in as many as 18 is higher than the national average.
  • India’s new daily closed cases stand at 300,112 — 4,157 deaths and 295,955 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.39%.
  • India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.9%.
  • India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 89.8 days, and for deaths at 51.6 days.
  • Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Tamil Nadu (34285), Kerala (29803), Maharashtra (24136), Karnataka (22758), and West Bengal (17005).
  • Among states with more than 100,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Karnataka (81.77%), J&K (82.39%), Tamil Nadu (82.84%), Uttarakhand (83.79%), and Assam (84.84%).
  • India on Tuesday conducted 2,217,320 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 334,811,496. The test positivity rate recorded was 9.4%.
  • Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Goa (18.75%), Maharashtra (16.77%), Dadra & Nagar Haveli-Daman & Diu (13.94%), Kerala (12.59%), and Sikkim (12.11%).
  • Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Goa (30.71%), Sikkim (29.57%), Nagaland (26.62%), West Bengal (25.72%), and Manipur (21.75%).
  • Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (1008080), J&K (610853), Kerala (532911), Karnataka (428102), and Uttarakhand (407608).
  • The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (5626155), Karnataka (2472973), Kerala (2395590), Tamil Nadu (1911496), and Uttar Pradesh (1677508).
  • Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 24,136 new cases to take its tally to 5626155. The state has added 282,092 cases in the past 10 days.
  • Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 22,758 cases to take its tally to 2472973.
  • Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 29,803 cases to take its tally to 2395590.
  • Tamil Nadu has added 34,285 cases to take its tally to 1911496.
  • Uttar Pradesh has added 3,723 cases to take its tally to 1677508.
  • Andhra Pradesh has seen its tally going up by 15,284 to 1609105.
  • Delhi has added 1,568 cases to take its tally to 1419986.
