DATA STORY: India sees biggest single-day jump in active cases since Sep 18

Contrary to the fairly consistent trend of daily net reduction, India’s count of active coronavirus cases has seen a significant jump on consecutive days. With an addition of 7,598, the most in a day since September 18, the number reached 452,344, or 2.62 per cent (one in 38) of all active cases globally. Overall, the country added 44,489 cases to take its tally to 9,266,705.
 
National capital Delhi, which is witnessing a third wave of infections, reported an increase of 5,246 cases and 99 more deaths in the past 24 hours. Its tally now stands at 545,787, and death toll at 8,720.

 
With 36,367 new cured cases in a day, India’s recovered cases reached 8,679,138 (93.66 per cent of all confirmed cases so far), while its Covid-19 death toll reached 135,223 (1.46 per cent of all confirmed cases), including the 524 fatalities reported on Thursday.
 

Now the seventh-most-affected country by active cases, third by fatalities, and second by total cases, India has added 308,222 cases in the past seven days. Here are the key takeaways from the coronavirus data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Thursday (November 26, 2020):
 

• With a daily increase of 44,489 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 9,222,216 on Wednesday to 9,266,705 – an increase of 0.5%. Death toll has reached 135,223, with 524 fatalities in a day. The seventh-most-affected country by active cases, third by fatality, and second by total cases, India has added 308,222 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 2.62% of all active cases globally (one in every 38 active cases), and 9.43% of all deaths (one in every 11 deaths).
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 24 days.
• The count of active cases across India increased by 7598, compared with 6079 on Wednesday. The states that have reported the biggest jump in active cases are Chhattisgarh (1861), Maharashtra (1250), Rajasthan (1123), Uttar Pradesh (948), and Madhya Pradesh (763).
• With 36367 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate has fallen marginally to 93.66%; the fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.46%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (3.16%), Maharashtra (2.60%), and Gujarat (2.12%). The rate in as many as 13 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 36891 — 524 deaths and 36367 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.42%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.5%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 144.0 days, and for deaths at 178.5 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Kerala (6491), Maharashtra (6159), Delhi (5246), West Bengal (3528), and Rajasthan (3285).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Himachal Pradesh (76.86%), Chhattisgarh (88.02%), Kerala (88.35%), Rajasthan (88.75%), and Haryana (89.65%).
• India on Wednesday conducted 1,090,238 coronavirus tests, taking the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 135,931,545. The test positivity rate recorded was 4.1%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (17.17%), Goa (13.96%), Chandigarh (12.46%), Nagaland (9.91%), and Kerala (9.61%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Himachal Pradesh (15.82%), Nagaland (12.45%), Rajasthan (9.86%), Kerala (9.83%), and Delhi (8.49%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (301627), J&K (218534), Andhra Pradesh (187435), Kerala (171357), and Karnataka (160646).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (1795959), Karnataka (878055), Andhra Pradesh (864674), Tamil Nadu (774710), and Kerala (578363).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported a net addition of 6,159 cases. The state has added 48,717 cases in the past 10 days.
• Karnataka, the second-most-affected state, has reported 1,630 cases to take its tally to 878,055.
• Andhra Pradesh, the third-most-affected state by total cases, added 831 cases to take its tally to 864,674.
• Kerala has added 6,491 cases to take its tally to 578,363.
• Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 1,534 to 774,710.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 2,305 cases to take its tally to 533,355.
• Delhi has added 5,246 cases to take its tally to 545,787.
