DATA STORY: India sees minor reduction in active Covid cases after 5 days of surge

After five straight days of net increase in active coronavirus cases, India on Tuesday reported a net decline of 269 to take the count to 168,358. This is 83.46 per cent lower than the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 0.77 per cent (one in 130). The country is 13^th among the most affected countries by active cases. On Tuesday, it added 12,286 cases to take its total caseload to 11,124,527. And, with 91 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 157248, or 1.41 per cent of total confirmed infections.
 

With 552,639 people getting Covid-19 vaccine shots on the first day of the second of vaccination, India’s total count of those inoculated reached 14,854,136. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 10,798,921 – or 97.07 per cent of total caseload – with 12,464 new cured cases being reported on Tuesday.
 

• With a daily increase of 12,286 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 11,112,241 on Monday to 11,124,527 – an increase of 0.1%. Death toll has reached 157,248, with 91 fatalities in a day. Now the thirteenth-most-affected country by active cases, fourth by fatality, and second by total and recovered cases, India has added 108,093 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 0.77% of all active cases globally (one in every 130 active cases), and 6.11% of all deaths (one in every 16 deaths).
• India has so far vaccinated 14,854,136 people. That is 133.54 per cent of its total caseload, and 1.0694 per cent of its population.
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 68 days.
• The count of active cases across India saw a net reduction of 269 on Tuesday, compared to an increase of 4,116 on Monday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Maharashtra (613), Punjab (221), Madhya Pradesh (116), Himachal (116), and Chhattisgarh (106).
• With 12,464 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate has reached 97.07%, while fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.41%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (3.20%), Maharashtra (2.41%), and Gujarat (2.20%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 12,555 — 91 deaths and 12,464 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 0.72%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.1%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 627.3 days, and for deaths at 1,197.4 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (6397), Kerala (1938), Punjab (633), Tamil Nadu (474), and Gujarat (427).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Maharashtra (93.94%), Punjab (94.15%), Kerala (95.07%), Madhya Pradesh (97.42%), and Gujarat (97.47%).
• India on Monday conducted 759,283 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 217,618,057. The test positivity rate recorded was 1.6%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (13.22%), Goa (11.13%), Nagaland (9.35%), Kerala (9.21%), and Ladakh (8.92%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Maharashtra (10.36%), Punjab (4.61%), Kerala (4.21%), Chandigarh (3.58%), and Goa (3.42%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (626851), J&K (395846), Kerala (328036), Karnataka (286588), and Andhra Pradesh (267601).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (2161467), Kerala (1061341), Karnataka (951600), Andhra Pradesh (889974), and Tamil Nadu (852016).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 6,397 new cases to take its tally to 2161467. The state has added 73,835 cases in the past 10 days.
• Kerala, now the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 1938 cases to take its tally to 1061341.
• Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 349 cases to take its tally to 951600.
• Andhra Pradesh has added 58 cases to take its tally to 889974.
• Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 474 to 852016.
• Delhi has added 175 cases to take its tally to 639464.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 81 cases to take its tally to 603608.
