In order to improve the traffic situation and prevent the vehicular accidents in the national capital, Delhi Police has recommended the state transport department to suspend the driving licences of more than 80,000 serious traffic violators, reported India Today.

Interestingly, the transport department has only data of suspension of licences and not cancellation. It would recommend cancellation of licences only after the nature of offence was considered as ‘serious’, said the India Today report.

For example, for a car driver involved in fatal accidents where people have lost their lives or were grievously hurt, a cancellation of licence is recommended, a police official told India Today.

As per the Delhi transport department’s official data, a little less than 82,000 licences have been recommended for cancellation. The range of violation is between January 1, 2014 and January 10, 2017. The transport department has already suspended 70,765 licences.

The Delhi traffic department has registered 1,519 deaths due to accidents across the union territory.
