Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat against South Africa in the crucial Pool-B encounter. A well paced century from Shikhar Dhawan (137 off 146 balls) was the backbone of the Indian innings and South Africa need 308 to win under lights at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma was run-out for a duck by AB de Villers. Dhawan and Virat Kohli steadied the innings before the Indian vice captain pulled a long hop by Imran Tahir to Du Plessis. Kohli scored 46.

Ajinkya Rahane provided the thrust the Indian innings required. It was a fluent innings by the Mumbaikar  before he was trapped leg before wicket by Dale Steyn for 79 in 60 balls.
