Resident doctors and medical students of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College(VMMC), Safdarjung Hospital and University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) went on strike today protesting the against the alleged high-handedness of police and administration against junior doctors in Kanpur.
The striking junior doctors are demanding the withdrawal of cases against the 24 arrested doctors and action against SSP Yashashvi Yadav, Kanour and SP MLA.
The agitating doctors boycotted the out-patient department (OPD), laboratories, ward and non-clinical services. Only the emergency services are operational.
Resident doctors and medical students of AIIMS, Lady Hardinge Medical College, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Maulana Azad Medical College are likely to join the strike from tomorrow.
"We will also go to Safdarjung in the evening to lend our support to the doctors in strike. We condemn the high-handedness of police and aministration against junior doctors in Kanpur and demand action against MLA Irfan Solanki and suspension of SSP Yashashvi Yadav," said AIIMS RDA secretary Shashank Pooniya.
The strike was called following a clash between supporters of SP MLA Irfan Solanki and junior doctors of GSV Medical College, Kanpur, in which the police resorted to lathicharge.
Over two dozen junior doctors were also booked but later released on bail.

The strike by the doctors in Kanpur today entered the sixth day paralysing the healthcare services in the city.
