Of this, police stations in Hyderabad city and Cyberabad accounted for more than 80 per cent, at 549 cases.

Releasing the statistics today here, Anurag Sharma, director-general of police, Telangana, attributed the rise in cases registered to increased vigilance, where the department had been registering cyber crimes, including internet abuses and hate-led Facebook postings.

"A lot of work is being done to use the technology to check cyber crime. The cyber crime wing of the CID is in touch with agencies like NTRO, Interpol and the ministry of home affairs to improve the monitoring and detection of cyber crimes," Sharma said.

Crime against women showed an overall 5.44 per cent fall this year, with the Dowry Prevention Act leading with a fall of 49.40 per cent, followed by a 13.42 per cent drop in harassment cases.

However, there has been a 14.34 per cent rise in rape cases and 26.28 per cent increase in cases registered under outraging of modesty.

The total cognisable crime in the state fell 0.4 per cent, with a reported 93,392 crimes registered up to November this year, as against 93,780 crimes for the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the state police is making available a 24-hour helpline (181) exclusively for women, which could act as a one-stop crisis centre providing medical, police, social and psychological assistance to women victims.

The high-level team, dominated by women civil service officers, had so far toured Gujarat, Mumbai, Chennai and Kerala for a better understanding of systems in place for women there and their implementation in Telangana. The state police has proposed the government to increase the representation (through reservation) of women in civil police to 33 per cent.

As part of its measures to improve crime conviction rate, the Telangana police, for the first time, has decided to adopt the court monitoring system in the entire state, which is currently being followed in Vijayawada.

Under this system, proceedings of cases, starting from trail to conviction, would be continuously monitored to improve the crime conviction rate. "It will monitor how the case is proceeding, how many witnesses have appeared, the evidence produced etc," he said. With its implementation, the conviction rate in Vijayawada has improved from 24 per cent few years ago to 54 per cent now, he added.

The department will be launching Operation Smile in January 2015 covering all districts and police commissionerates of Telangana to track missing children.
