The Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Food Corporation of India (FCI) scheduled for next week was cancelled because of the ongoing agitation of FCI employees.
Around 15,000 employees of FCI went on a day-long strike today to demand higher incentives and better retirement benefits, impacting procurement and distribution work. The unions also wrote to FCI threatening to boycott its golden jubilee celebration.
The Golden Jubilee celebrations was to be attended by President Pranab Mukherjee, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, Law Minister Kapil Sibal along with Food Minister K.V. Thomas. “The employees have also threatened to hold a nationwide strike from January 19, which could further aggravate the situation,” another official said.
"The unions have in written stated that they will boycott the golden jubilee celebrations, will agitate at the spot of the event, following which it has been decided to call off the event," a senior Ministry official said.
Over 20,000 of the estimated 25,000 regular employees are on a ‘work-to-rule’ strike since October which has slowed down movement of foodgrains across the country. They are demanding better pension and retirement benefits.
