Over 200 films from 75 countries will be screened at the 13th Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) that will be held in the city from January 8-15, 2015. The theme of the festival is War Against War. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the First World War and also the 25th anniversary of The Fall of the Berlin Wall.
Jabbar Patel, veteran film maker and director of PIFF said, "The festival will screen films on these subjects as well as those on the cold war. The hearts bruised during the great wars were the ones that destroyed the Berlin Wall. The theme is about giving a message of humanity and peace to the world."
The various sections include one dedicated to Marathi cinema today, a country focus of 20 films from Algeria (7), Egypt (7) and Brazil (6), Indian cinema (10 regional films) and seven documentary films in the 'Legends we Remember' segment courtesy the Films Division.
Apart from the screening, the festival will be an opportunity to discuss cinema with veteran personalities. Vijay Tendulkar Memorial Lecture, seminars about Marathi cinema and interactions with Indian and international dignitaries in the media centre will be held during the festival.
In the retrospective category, six films of renowned Indian actor Soumitra Chatterjee, seven films of well-known Polish director Krzysztof Zanussi and four of Peruvian film director Francisco Jose Lombardi will be screened.
With help from the French Embassy, 11 films curated by French director Bertrand Tavernier will be screened under the French Grand Classic section.
The film festival will have 350 shows at 14 screens in eight locations in Pune and neighbouring Pimpri Chinchwad which is jointly organised by Pune Film Foundation and the Government of Maharashtra.
PIFF will have films screenings in 13 sections. - world competition, Marathi competition, Volkswagen international student competition (live action and animation), Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation short film competition (natural heritage, man made heritage and culture of Maharashtra), country focus, retrospective, Indian cinema, tribute, kaleidoscope, films and documentaries from Films Division, global cinema, films restored by National Film Development Corporation, war against war and Marathi cinema today.

They will be competing for the Prabhat Best International Film Award (Cash Prize of Rs. 10 lakh) and Prabhat Best International Feature Film Director (Cash Prize of Rs 5 lakh).
