The Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, under the Siksha O Anusandhan (SOA) University has successfully conducted the first ever bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in the state at its newly opened Haematology department.
The hospital has added a Stem Cell Transplantation unit to the existing facilities
A 42 year old patient from Jharsuguda has undergone the BMT process (also known as Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation) last November.
The six bedded state-of-the-art Stem Cell Transplantation unit is the first of its kind in the state with HEPA filter and Laminar Flow system.
The unit is provided with a procedure room for collection of peripheral blood stem cells, a pharmacy with laminar air hood so that drugs can be prepared in sterile cabinet, a separate kitchen to prepare pressure cooked food.
The department is equipped with COBE Spectra Apheresis machine which is used to do red cell exchange, leukapheresis, plasma exchange and stem cell collection. It has already done four leukapheresis.
"There are about 600 patients in the state who need transplantation", Das told media persons.

The department, headed by Prabodh Kumar Das, has a clinical section to provide treatment of all haematological disorders and a laboratory section to give diagnostic support.
