About 145 passengers were evacuated from an Air India Airbus A320 aircraft (AI 405, Khajuraho-Delhi flight) at Delhi airport on Monday night, following smoke in its wheels. Five passengers were hurt in the operation.
Both AI and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said there was no fire. The captain of the flight reported failure in the hydraulic system and the aircraft made an emergency landing at Delhi at 8 pm. Upon landing, smoke was seen from the aircraft’s landing gear (wheels) and the captain ordered passenger evacuation on the runway, using slides.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is probing. The aircraft was inducted in 1994.
A DIAL spokesperson said all passengers were evacuated safely. “Smoke was seen from the undercarriage. Airport fire tenders doused the wheels and no fire was reported,” the spokesperson said. An AI official said there were a few sparks in the nose wheel.
