Artists from the country and abroad will soon be able live and work together at an 'artist village' of global standards in Kannur District.

Kerala Lalithakala Akademi has drawn up an ambitious plan to set up the village, a 10-acre studios-cum-residential complex, at Sreekandapuram. Artists from the country and across the globe can come, stay and work together at the proposed facility, akademi officials said.

Touted as the first such facility of global standards in the country, the village would have separate studios providing canvasses to granite, wood, metal and clay artists.

Residential complexes, exhibition galleries, library, conference hall and cafeteria would be among the highlights of the proposed artist village, a top akademi official said.

"There are many well-run private artist villages and houses in India. But, many of them are charging huge amount from artists to stay and work there. So, the akademi has thought about a facility providing artists space on nominal rates," said Akademi chairman KA Francis.

He said the village was expected to woo a large number of artists even from neighbouring countries as such a facility is very rare.
