Goa government today claimed that it has been releasing extra water from the dams in view of the incessant rains lashing the state for the past two weeks.
The water levels of state's major dam Selaulim has exceeded the full reservoir level (FRL), while FRL at Anjunem dam in North East part of the state is much below the mark, state Water Resources Department (WRD) officials said.
"There is nothing to worry about. Even if water at Selaulim dam is overflowing, it is being released in a systematic manner. Also water level at Anjunem dam is two metres below the FRL," WRD's chief engineer S T Nadkarni said today.
The state has been witnessing incessant rains since last two weeks, with the Indian meteorological department (IMD) predicting heavy showers for next 74 hours.
The department in its official release has also warned fishermen not to venture in the sea due to expectation of heavy winds.
Goa has received 60 inches rainfall so far for this season, says the IMD figures.
Nadkarni said that the department has been releasing the water to regulate the flow in the dams during low tide or during dry patches. "We caution people living downstream before releasing the water," he said, adding that the water is released on daily basis.
He stated that a gap of 1.5 to 2 metres below FRL is always maintained to ensure that the limits are not exceeded in case there are floods upstream the dam.
