Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said that economic freedom is the essential for independence and her government is taking all steps for the upliftment of the poor.
In her Independence Day speech, she said, “Economic freedom is the foundation of all types of freedom. For the past four years, the government has been taking several steps for the upliftment of the poor.”
The state is expected to get investment of over Rs 1,00,000 crore at a global investor meet to be held here next month, claimed Jayalalithaa.
In her speech, she listed out various social welfare measures implemented by her government in the field of education and others areas. She also announced an increase in the monthly pension for the freedom fighters and their families.
The chief minister also gave away the A P J Abdul Kalam award to space scientist Valarmathi. The award was instituted this year in memory of former president late Abdul Kalam.
While reports have stated that the state government will reduce the working hours of state-run alcholol shops TASMAC, the chief minister didn't mention it. Various political parties, NGOs and others have been asking for total prohibition in the state.
