With defence and prosecution arguments concluding on Friday, the special sessions court in Ahmedabad will now fix a date on Monday for pronouncement of quantum of punishment to the 24 convicted in the Gulberg Society massacre case.

On Friday, defence and prosecution arguments on the sentencing concluded, with the former demanding minimum punishment for convicts. The court informed that on Monday, June 13, date will be fixed for pronouncing quantum of punishment.

The prosecution, on the other hand, has sought death sentence or jail term till death for all convicts.

Earlier, on Thursday, defence lawyers argued that the witnesses in the case were unable to recognise the convicts. On the said grounds, the lawyers sought minimum punishment for the convicts.

It needs to be mentioned here that in all 69 people including Congress parliamentarian Ehsan Jafri, were killed in the Gulberg Society massacre during the post Godhra riots.

Last week, while 24 people were convicted under the case including Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Atul Vaidya, 36 people, including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Bipin Patel were acquitted.
