Heavy rains lash Saurashtra region; Rajkot water-logged

Heavy rains lashed many parts of Saurashtra on Friday as the monsoon gained momentum. Since Thursday night different parts of Saurashtra received about 25 mm to 250 mm rain. However, there were no reports of any damages or casualties in the region.

Many parts of Saurashtra region have received good rain since yesterday. According to meteorological department, till Friday afternoon Rajkot was received 65mm rain, while Jamanagar registered 50 mm with Devbhumi Dwarka receiving 60 mm.

According to official data, Junagadh received 100 mm; Kodinar 153 mm till 10 am on Friday. The building constructed to protect historical rocks of Maurya King Ashoka collapsed because of heavy rains on Thursday night in Junagadh.

Due to heavy rain in Rajkot, there was waterlogging in many places. Main roads of the city like Raiya road, Kalavad road, Limda chowk, Yagnik road and University road too witnessed heavy water logging upto two feet.

The rains also brought cheers for the farmers. According to agriculture experts, the rain will boost the sowing progress in Gujarat.

Water level of many dams in Saurashtra region was increased within last 24 hours due to good rain. Water level of dams in Rajkot has increased by 1 to 3 feet. In Bhavnagar district Shetrunji dam water level increased by 9 feet while water level in Machundri dam rose by 2 feet last night.

Several check dams and rivers were overflowing in Amreli, Jasdan, Gondal, Rajkot, Una and other parts of Saurashtra. Ashapura dam in Gondal taluka was overflowing since morning.
