Foundation stone for the IIM Trichy was laid at Mathur, near Trichy in January, 2011, on 172 acre of land provided by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The institute would operate from the temporary premises of NIT Trichy till its own campus gets ready.

IIM Trichy, which has launched a satellite centre in Chennai in November, 2012, within a year of the launch of the institute in Trichy, is also looking at expanding the Chennai facility as a residential campus. "It is in the initial stages of planning. If we could get five acre land support from the government, we can develop the centre into a fullfledged residential campus," said Agnihotri.

The institute is also in the final stage of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a research collaboration with a global IT major based in the country. The MoU will be for joint research with the IT company in various projects. The IIM, within the first one year of operation, has partnered with  IAE Graduate School of Management, Marseille, France for students exchange, faculty exchange and joint research by the faculty members of both the institutes. In the first year, IIM has sent two students to IAE at Marseille.
