In a shocking step, the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkie, has expelled 73 of its students for scoring lower than five cumulative grade points average (CGPA). This is the first instance where an IIT has asked as many as 73 students to leave the institute due to poor grades.
The institute sent a notice of expulsion to the students in May, after the second semester exams, and they were given time to file a ‘mercy appeal’. According to the institute, a prior warning about keeping up with the academic requirements was given as well.
The student association of IIT, Roorkie, has called this decision hasty and unfair. The parents of the students had signed declarations allowing the authority to expel students for poor academic performance. However, the sheer number this time has caused quite a ripple in the academic circles.
The registrar of IIT, Roorkie, Prashant Garg, has called the decision just, since it was clearly mentioned in the rules.
