Ocean climate and tsunami monitoring institute Incois today launched a couple of solutions that could lead to significant fuel savings for the maritime sector and also help ships alter path during extreme weather patterns on the high oceans.
At the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (Incois)’s fifth user interaction workshop here today, it unveiled two services —a daily bulletin on ocean state forecast along standard shipping routes and a high-resolution operational ocean forecast (HOOFS) service for 48 hours.
Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) chairman and managing director AK Gupta said the weather routing of ships played an important role in fuel savings as shipping lines normally prefer to navigate in the direction of wind and along better weather routes. The Incois bulletins cover standard sea lanes in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
The centre also launched an atlas on potential global fishing zones, an android-based mobile application for ocean information services for the fishing community. Plans were also to make it available on its website and on Google Playstore.
