Conceding to the long standing demand of the state government, the Union cabinet today gave its nod to a proposal to accord international status to the city-based Biju Patnaik airport along with the Imphal airport in Manipur.
Declaration of these airports as international airports will offer improved connectivity, wider choice of services at competitive cost to the air travellers resulting in boosting tourism and economic development of the region and the country, said a PIB release.
Bhubaneswar Airport which belongs to Airport Authority of India (AAI) is suitable for operation of Code 'D' aircraft of type B-767-400.
In March this year, a new domestic terminal building was inaugurated with all modern amenities for handling of arrival and departure of 400 passengers each. Laced with state-of-the-art facilities and amenities, the airport building, spread over an area of 18,240 square meters (sq m), has in-line compatible baggage handling system, escalators, elevators, PA system, flight information display system (FIDS), CCTV for surveillance with the interiors depicting paintings on the state’s rich heritage and culture.
The modification/renovation of the existing domestic terminal building into international terminal with an area of 6,264 sqm has been completed.
The airport building has six check-in counters, custom counters, immigration counters and other facilities for international operation such as health services and animal and plant quarantine areas within its premises.
To attract more private carriers for running flights to domestic and international destinations from the city, the state government is keen to reduce value added tax (VAT) on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to five per cent from 20 per cent presently.
In March this year, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had urged Union civil aviation minister, Ajit Singh to take early steps for declaring Biju Patnaik as an international airport.
Imphal Airport, which also belongs to AAI, is suitable for 'C' type (A-320/321) of aircraft operations in all weather conditions.
