K'taka polls: Campaign ends today

Voting to be held for 223 constituencies on May 5 from 7 am to 5 pm

Curtains will fall on the next phase of Karnataka Assembly elections when public campaign will come to an end tomorrow at 5 pm.

With only a few hours left political parties led by their leaders and followers, including the candidates, are making desperate last minute bid to woo the voters setting their eyes on the 224-member 14th Legislative Assembly, polling for which is scheduled on May 5. Candidates in Mysore today undertook hectic campaigning in their respective constituencies appealing to voters to exercise their vote in their favour.

Representation of the People Act 1951 prohibits campaigning during the period of 48 hours ending with the hour fixed for the conclusion of the poll for any election in the polling area, including TV.

According to the Election Commission, display of any election matter intended or calcutated to influence or affect the result of the election in the TV channels is prohibited. It has also clarified that while telecastingôbroadcasting programmes like debates / panel discussions, current affairs programmes etc. it should be ensured that these do not violate the provisions of Section 126 of the Act, and that programmes involving candidates and leaders of political parties including interviewing or projecting any candidate or political party or its leaders not be telecast / broadcast during the prohibited period of 48 hours mentioned in the section.

The commission has reiterated that the TV and radio channels and cable networks should ensure that the contents of the programmes telecast / broadcast / displayed by them during the 48 hours do not contain any material, including views / appeals by panelists / participants that may be construed as promoting / prejudicing the prospect of any particular party or candidate(s) or influencing / affecting the result of the election.

It has reminded them violation of the aforesaid provision of the Section is punishable with imprisonment upto two years, or with fine or both.

Publication, broadcast or telecast of voters' turnout survey of any polling station during the polling hours between 7 am and 5.30 pm is also prohibited, according to a release.
