The state government has convened a special session of the state legislature on Monday to make amendments that could lead to the trifurcation of BBMP.
“In exercise of the powers conferred under Article 174 (1) of the Constitution of India, the governor of Karnataka has summoned the legislative Assembly to meet on April 20 at the legislative Assembly chamber in Vidhana Soudha,” a government notification said.
The session will debate and bring an amendment to Karnataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) Act to pave way for the division of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) into three bodies.
The move to convene a special session comes after the state governor Vaju Bhai Vala turned down the ordinance proposed by the government to trifurcate BBMP. The governor had raised objection to the timing of the ordinance, when the elections to BBMP was due in a few days. He was not satisfied with the answers given by the government for bringing an ordinance on the issue of trifurcation of BBMP.
Opposition parties led by Bharatiya Janata Party had opposed the move to split BBMP into three bodies, while the state government wants it to be trifurcated so that better civic services could be delivered to citizens. It was also a pre-poll agenda of the Congress in 2013.
