Karnataka seems to be advancing in building an ecosystem to further foster entrepreneurship in the state which it is doing in association with engineering colleges at the district level.

In its recent budget, the state government had announced the establishment of incubation centres in the ICT sector, in association with some better-performing engineering colleges at the district headquarters, mainly to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation.

In the Karnataka Information Communication Technology Group (KIG) 2020 report, entrepreneurship development and mentoring is one of the 10 initiatives for creating new opportunities and jobs. One of the proposals under this head is to build a 'Karnataka New Age Incubation Network', which is being implemented through KBITS. The scheme is called 'IT Incubation Centre Programme'.

Incidentally, Mysore has been recognised as one of the emerging ICT cities.

Advancing in this direction, the Karnataka Biotechnology & Information Technology Services (KBITS), an autonomous organisation established under the Department of Information Technology & Biotechnology, Karnataka government, has selected Mysore-based National Institute of Engineering (NIE) as one of the nine engineering colleges for 'Karnataka New Age Incubation Network'.

NIE will get funding of Rs 40 lakh from KBITS to establish an incubation centre in the campus. It is proposed to identify highly-innovative projects and NIE will incubate 10 such projects every year. Each project will be executed by a team of entrepreneurs from Mysore district.

"NIE is the only engineering college chosen from Mysore district for the network which will be located in chosen colleges that are in the emerging ICT centres. A memorandum of understanding between NIE and KBITS was signed in Bangalore on December 30," said NIE Principal G L Shekar today.

KBITS Managing Director Vijay Shankar said, this programme would select entrepreneurs by giving first preference to students, research scholars and alumni of the chosen colleges and next preference to those from other colleges in the respective districts.

The programme would cater to the projects that solve local problems and find solutions to the local needs rather than global problems and needs.

"The focus will be more on building an ecosystem fostering entrepreneurship rather than building physical space and purchasing expensive equipment," he said.

All the nine incubation centres, selected by KBITS, will be networked to share their experiences and learn from one another. Further, they will also be connected to the proposed Mobile Applications Centre of Excellence for Electronics Systems Design and Manufacturing located in Bangalore, Vijay Shankar added.
