Suspended vice-chancellor of Karnatak University H B Walikar was produced before the third additional district judge in Dharwad on Tuesday evening by the Lokayukta Police. He was released soon after as the high court granted him conditional bail.
The Lokayukta Police, who had arrested Walikar on October 20 under the Prevention of Corruption Act, brought him from Bengaluru after the doctors at the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Research and hospital discharged him on Tuesday morning.
The sleuths, soon after arresting Walikar, had taken him to the district civil hospital in Dharwad for a medical checkup and on doctors’ advise sent him to KIMS hospital in Hubli. He was later shifted to a Bengaluru hospital for treatment for cardiac problems.
On Tuesday, when produced before the judge, H S Ballolli, Walikar complained that the Lokayukta Police had taken him directly for a medical checkup to the civil hospital and later to KIMS without producing him before the court.
“The police came to my office around 5.30 PM and arrested me around 7.30 PM. I had thought they would produce me before the judge. Had they done so, I would probably have secured bail the same day. Instead, they took me to the hospital in Dharwad, Hubballi and Bengaluru,” a pale-looking Walikar complained.
Further, he said, the Jayadeva Hospital charged a huge amount for the treatment provided and his family had to foot the bill. “The Lokayukta Police had admitted me to the Jayadeva Hospital and it is their responsibility to pay the bill. They should reimburse the money spent by us on the medical treatment,” he demanded.
The judge asked Walikar to abide by the conditions put by the high court while granting him bail. As per the condition, Walikar has to present himself before the Lokayukta police every day for two hours each for inquiry till November 17.
