OceanNet, an internet connectivity solution that provides cellular signals to fishing boats, was launched by Amrita University in Kerala. It can beam cell signals over 60 km at sea, 45 km beyond the range of cellphone towers.
OceanNet comprises a base station on shore that boosts cellular signals, which are received by vessels equipped with an inexpensive receiver-broadcaster system. These vessels, in turn, become broadcasters, extending the range of internet connectivity 60 km beyond the shoreline.
Wi-Fi networks aboard the vessels allow fishermen to connect with their regular smartphones. Fisherman can use email, Skype, Whatsapp and other Internet-based applications, according to Maneesha Sudheer, director, Amrita Centre for Wireless Networks & Applications, which developed the solution. Researchers at Amrita University are also developing tracking and weather apps.
OceanNet was launched by the Minister of State for Human Resources Prakash Javadekar in Kerala today.
J Mercykutty Amma, Kerala's minister for fisheries and harbour engineering, said OceanNet would help fishermen stay in touch with their families and communicate with authorities if in distress.
