Results of the Karnataka Assembly elections, which were conducted on May 5, will be announced by tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.
The counting of votes will be take place at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad on Wednesday for seven assembly constituencies of Dharwad district where bigwigs, including chief minister Jagadish Shettar, is in the race. The seven assembly constituencies are - Navalgund, Kalghatagi, Kundagol, Dharwad, Hubli-Dharwad West, Hubli-Dharwad East and Hubli-Dharwad Central.
The counting of votes will decide the fate of 94 candidates including stalwarts like Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar (Hubli-Dharwad central). The prominent leaders in the fray are former minister P C Siddhanagoudar of JD(S) and mining baron Santosh Lad of the Congress (Kalghatagi), former minister Hanumantappa Alkod of JD(S) (Hubli-Dharwad East reserved), former minister K N Gaddi of Congress (Navalgund) and chief minister's parliamentary secretary Shankar Patil Munenkoppa of BJP (Navalgund).
Deputy Commissioner Sameer Shukla said that the counting of votes would begin at 8 am. Total number of seven counting chambers have been set up to take up the counting of votes of seven constituencies simultaneously. Every counting chamber will have 18 counting superintendents, 15 counting assistants and 16 micro observers. In all 343 staff have been deputed for the counting related works.
The district administration has provided them all necessary training pertaining to the process of counting of votes. An additional training programme was held on Tuesday to avoid any confusion. The agents of the candidates have already been distributed the entry passes.
The entry to the respective counting chambers for the agents will be strictly against producing the entry passes issued by the Election Commission. Hence, all the political party agents have been requested to compulsorily bring the entry passes with them. All arrangements have been made to see that the counting of votes takes place smoothly, he said.
He said, a control room has been set up at the counting centre premises. The staff of National Informatic Centre (NIC) has been deputed to upload the information related to the counting and results of each of the assembly constituency to the website. Tight security arrangements have been made at the counting centre by deputy additional police and paramilitary forces, Shukla said.
Meanwhile, in Mysore the district administration has made all arrangements for a smooth enumeration process and declaration of results of the 10 Assembly constituencies at the two counting centres - the JSS College of Arts, Science and Commerce on Ooty Road and the Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (JCE) at Manasa Gangotri campus - in Mysore.
Counting of votes will take place under tight vigil, which is in place for the safety of the electronic voting machines in which 1,430,181 voters out of the total number of 2,009,987 electorate in the district have recorded their choice of the candidate (71.15 per cent). Strict restrictions have been enforced. Prohibitory orders will be in force from morning till late evening and victory processions and celebrations have been banned both in the city and the district.
Counting of votes of all the 10 constituencies will commence simultaneously. Postal ballots will be counted first. Of the 9,629 postal ballots distributed, 7,288 voters have exercised their franchise. Only one postal ballot paper has been received of the 786 service votes, Deputy Commissioner and District Electoral Officer C Shikha said at a press conference here on Tuesday.
Each Assembly segment is provided with 20 tables plus two extra in two rooms, where 11-12 rounds of counting will take place. A public address system has been arranged to announce the results round-wise and also in the district website.
Besides, supervisors and micro-observers, 260 employees will be engaged in counting for which leased line connectivity has been obtained for computers and use of Genysis software, she said.
