Battleground Lakhimpur: Akhilesh, BSP's S C Mishra visit victims' kin after Rahul-Priyanka's trip
A day after Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh to meet the families of the victims killed in violence during a farmers' protest on Sunday, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and BSP's SC Mishra travelled to their homes on Thursday.
After the Uttar Pradesh government allowed the leaders of various political parties to visit Lakhimpur Kheri in groups of not more than five people on Wednesday, a steady flow of opposition leaders to the homes of the victims of Sunday's violence is being witnessed.
With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls due early next year, Lakhimpur Kheri has emerged as a focal point of politics with top leaders of anti-BJP parties rushing to the area in a bid to push the saffron party to the corner.

Punjab Congress leaders, ministers allowed to go to Lakhimpur Kheri
Several Punjab Congress leaders, including state ministers and MLAs, were allowed to head towards Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh, hours after they were detained at a police station in Saharanpur.
Punjab Transport Minister Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said the Uttar Pradesh administration has allowed 20 to 25 Punjab MLAs and ministers to go to Lakhimpur Kheri.
He said that the UP police would escort them to the city where they would meet the families of farmers, who were killed in violence that erupted during a protest Sunday.
Earlier, a large number of party workers, leaders, including several ministers and legislators, who had assembled in Mohali in Punjab, headed towards Lakhimpur Kheri in their vehicles but were detained at a police station in Saharanpur.

Two arrested, minister's son summoned by police over Lakhimpur violence
Two men were arrested Thursday and Union minister Ajay Mishra's son asked to appear before police in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri violence that killed eight people.
Ashish Mishra, the son of Union Minister of State for Home, has been asked to come to the police lines at 10 am Friday, a notice said.
Two empty cartridges were found at the site of the violence near Tikonia village, police said.
They identified the arrested men as Luvkush of Banbirpur village and Ashish Pandey of Nighasan tehsil, two of the seven people mentioned in an FIR lodged by police.
They were earlier being questioned by police.

Govt giving message that those in power can do anything: Priyanka on Lakhimpur Kheri violence
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who arrived here on Thursday to meet the families of two farmers killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, said by allowing Union minister Ajay Kumar Mishra to continue on the post, the Centre is giving the message that those in power can do anything.
The Union minister's son, Ashish Kumar Mishra, and others have been booked in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri violence that erupted during a farmers' protest on Sunday.
"If the minister of state for home does not resign nor is he sacked, then it means that the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving a message to the public that if someone is in power, if he is a minister, he can do anything," Gandhi told reporters in Moharnia, where she met the family members of Gurvinder Singh, one of the four farmers killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

SC clarifies: Communication problem, did not take up case suo motu
The Supreme Court has clarified that it did not take up the Lakhimpur violence case suo motu as a plea was registered by two lawyers — Shiv Kumar Tripathi and C S Panda. "I think there is a communication problem", CJI N V Ramana said.
Lakhimpur Kheri violence LIVE Updates: The Supreme Court, on Thursday, asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file a status report regarding the accused in the Lakhimpur violence case and whether any action had been taken against them. “We need to know who are the accused against whom you have registered FIR and whether you have arrested them or not,” the court said.
"Grievance is you are not properly investigating," the apex court told UP's BJP government.
The court will continue hearing the matter Friday.
Earlier the court said it is hearing the deaths of eight people in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district in response to a public interest litigation. It had not taken up the matter on its own.
“I think there is a communication problem,” Chief Justice N V Ramana was quoted as saying on Thursday in media reports. The Uttar Pradesh government has constituted separately a one-member commission led by a former high court judge to probe the deaths during farmer protests on Sunday.
