Active Covid-19 infections surge to 12,412 in Tamil Nadu
Five districts, including Chennai, accounted for the majority of new coronavirus infections on Tuesday as Tamil Nadu continued to witness a surge with 2,731 fresh cases being reported, pushing the tally to 27,55,587, the health department said.
Nine more people succumbed to the contagion, taking the toll to 36,805, a department bulletin said.

During a virtual review meeting on the prevailing coronavirus situation in the state, the chief minister also asked the authorities to strictly enforce necessary restrictions without affecting the livelihood of people.

Schools in Pune district to remain shut for Classes 1 to 8 till Jan 30
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Tuesday said the administration has decided to shut schools for Classes 1 to 8 in Pune district till January 30 due to the rise in Covid-19 cases.
Speaking to reporters after attending the review meeting of the COVID-19 situation, Pawar, who is also the guardian minister of the district, said teaching in online mode will continue.

80 doctors, students at Patiala medical college test positive for Covid
A total of 80 people, including doctors, students and support staff, of the Government Rajindra Hospital and Medical College in Punjab's Patiala have tested positive for COVID-19, officials said on Tuesday.
This comes as Patiala is turning out to be the worst-hit district in Punjab in terms of a rising number of coronavirus cases.
Patiala reported 143 fresh coronavirus cases, accounting for 34 per cent of the 419 cases in Punjab, with a positivity rate of 23.95 per cent, on Monday.
