Mumbai logs over 20,000 Covid-19 cases to set a new record
Mumbai reported 20,181 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, a fresh all-time single-day high and up 5,015 infections, or 33.06 per cent, from a day ago, while four more patients succumbed to the disease, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
With these additions, the financial capital's coronavirus tally jumped to 8,53,809, while the death toll climbed to 16,388, the BMC said in a bulletin. On Wednesday, Mumbai had logged 15,166 new coronavirus infections, surpassing the previous all time-high of 11,163 registered in April 4, 2021, during the second wave of the pandemic. As many as 10,860 cases were reported in the metropolis on Tuesday.

Gujarat reports 4,213 Covid cases; 1,862 in Ahmedabad district
Gujarat continued to report high number of fresh Covid-19 cases on Thursday with a single-day tally of 4,213 infections, taking its overall Covid caseload to 8,44,856.
The state presently has 14,346 active Covid cases.

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot tests positive for coronavirus
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot Thursday said he has tested positive for coronavirus, the second time that he contracted the virus. "This evening I got my Covid test done which came positive. I have very mild symptoms and no other problems. All the people who came in contact with me are requested to isolate themselves and get their Covid test done," Gehlot tweeted.
This is the second time that the 70-year-old has been infected with the virus.
Recently his son Vaibhav Gehlot has also tested positive for Covid.

2 east Delhi markets ordered shut for COVID guideline violation
Two markets in the national capital were ordered to be shut for a certain period in view of "violation” of COVID containment guidelines, according to an official order.
It said the breach may have caused "super-spreading" of the coronavirus.
The office of the Karawal Nagar SDM on January 5 ordered closure of Sonia Vihar 2nd Pusta Market and Mukund Vihar Market, Karawal Nagar, from 4 pm January 6 till 10 am January 7, or till further orders, whichever is earlier.

Live news updates: India recorded 90,928 new cases of Covid-19 overnight to take the total to 35.11 million, said the health ministry on Wednesday, marking the biggest rise in daily infections since June 11 last year. Deaths increased by 325 to reach a total of 482,876.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi cancelled his programme in Punjab on Wednesday after a security breach left him stuck on a highway for 15-20 minutes because of protesting farmers while he was travelling to a public function near the border with Pakistan.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a detailed report on today’s security breach in Punjab. Such dereliction of security procedure in the Prime Minister’s visit is totally unacceptable and accountability will be fixed,” said Home Minister Amit Shah on Twitter. In a spiralling row, the BJP accused Punjab's ruling Congress of "murderous intentions". Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi denied any lapse and said he would die for the Prime Minister but he was never in danger.
