The Monsoon session of Parliament got off to a stormy start on Monday leading to adjournment of the two Houses without transacting much business following an opposition uproar over issues ranging from price rise to the Agnipath scheme. The uproar broke out even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged MPs before the start of the parliamentary proceedings to make the session as productive as possible and called for debate, criticism and analysis for positive contribution to policies and decisions. In a lighter vein, he remarked that in Delhi rains have begun, but the heat outside is not reducing and wondered whether the heat will come down inside Parliament.
 

West Bengal reported 1,449 fresh COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to 20,72,307, while the death toll climbed to 21,282 with six more fatalities, the health department said on Monday. The positivity rate stands at 16.90 per cent, it said. The state had reported 2,659 new infections on Sunday. West Bengal now has 29,583 active cases, while 20,21,442 people have recovered from the disease so far. It tested 8,573 samples for COVID-19 since Sunday, the department added.

Amarnath Yatra touches 200,000, over 15,000 have 'darshan' in one day

Nearly two lakh pilgrims have performed the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. Over 15,000 Yatris had 'darshan' at the cave shrine on Monday.

 

Officials of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) that manages the affairs of the annual Yatra said, "Since the Yatra started on June 30 this year, 1,99,453 have performed the Yatra. "15,642 Yatris had Darshan at the holy cave yesterday".

Ballot boxes of presidential polls start reaching Delhi

'Mr Ballot Box' carrying votes cast by the lawmakers in Monday's presidential election in states and Union territories, began their special journey back to the national capital soon after the closing hours of the polling process.

 

The ballot box from the Delhi Legislative Assembly had reached the strong room late Monday night while ballot boxes from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam and Rajasthan were brought here by separate commercial flights.

US reports over 6 mn child Covid-19 cases in 2022

More than six million child Covid-19 cases have been reported in the US in 2022, with nearly 287,000 cases added in the past four weeks, according to the latest report by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Children's Hospital Association.

 

Child Covid-19 cases in the US are far higher as compared to that in 2021. There is an urgent need to collect more age-specific data to assess the severity of illness related to new variants as well as potential longer-term effects, said the AAP in the report released on Monday.

Rishi Sunak bags more votes to extend lead in UK PM race

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak extended his lead in the race to replace Boris Johnson as the Conservative Party leader and British Prime Minister, as he added 14 more votes to his tally in the latest round of voting by Tory members of Parliament.

 

Sunak, 42, has consistently topped the shortlist since voting began last week and on Monday he bagged 115 votes in the third round, which leaves only four candidates in the race.
