SAIL turns red with consolidated loss of Rs 329 crore in July-September quarter

State-owned Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) on Thursday slipped into red posting a consolidated loss of Rs 329 crore during the quarter ended on September 30, 2022.
 
It had clocked Rs 4,338.75 crore net profit during the July-September period of the preceding fiscal, SAIL said in a BSE filing.
 
The company has also reported a fall in its total income at Rs 26,642.02 crore from Rs 27,007.02 crore in the same quarter a year ago.

Supreme Court allows house arrest request of jailed activist Gautam Navlakha

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed jailed activist Gautam Navlakha's request for house arrest, saying prima facie there is no reason to reject his medical report, the Press Trust of India reported.

A bench of Justices K M Joseph and Hrishikesh Roy said the house arrest order should be implemented within 48 hours.

The bench also directed Navlakha to deposit Rs 2.4 lakh, an estimated amount which the National Investigation Agency (NIA) claims as expense for making available police personnel.

Delhi University postpones 3rd round of seat allocation for UG programmes

The third round of seat allocation at Delhi University which was scheduled to begin on Thursday has been postponed, the varsity said.

The new schedule will be announced on Friday, it said in an official statement.

A senior university official said the rescheduling has been done as the varsity needed some time to prepare the list for the admission for all supernumerary seats like those under economically weaker section (EWS) and sports categories, the Press Trust of India reported.

Gujarat elections: Morbi MLA among 5 ministers denied ticket in BJP

Five Gujarat ministers including the MLA from Morbi are among 38 sitting BJP members of the Assembly who have been denied ticket by the party for the upcoming state elections.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment Brijesh Merja, the legislator from Morbi where a bridge collapse incident last month claimed 135 lives, is among those dropped from the list of 160 candidates whose names were announced by the BJP on Thursday, the Press Trust of India reported.

Gujarat Assembly Speaker Nimaben Acharya, who won from Bhuj seat of Kutch district in 2012 and 2017, has also been denied ticket this time by the party.

Courts should be sensitive, we are dealing with humans not files: Delhi HC

Courts need to maintain sensitivity and compassion that is balanced with law as they are dealing with humans and not mere files and orders, the Delhi High Court has said.

The court's observation came while dealing with a petition by a murder convict serving a life term, who sought a two-month parole to settle the division of his family property, arrange funds for his family and also "curb inner stress" following the death of his mother, the Press Trust of India reported.

The petitioner's request for parole was turned down by the Delhi government on several grounds, including that his conduct in jail was unsatisfactory.

Sharad Pawar not to join Congress Bharat Jodo Yatra: Jairam Ramesh

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar will not join the Congress's Bharat Jodo Yatra due to health issues, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on Thursday.

Addressing media persons here, Ramesh said Pawar (81) had earlier agreed to participate in the foot march, the Press Trust of India reported.

''He was recently hospitalised and considering doctor's advice for rest, he will not join (the yatra),'' said Ramesh, the general secretary (communications) of the All India Congress Committee.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut met his party chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday, a day after the Rajya Sabha member's release from jail in a money laundering case.

Uddhav Thackeray's son and former Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray greeted Raut outside the Thackerays' private residence 'Matoshree' in suburban Bandra.

Talking to reporters earlier in the day, Raut said former state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray stood by his family members while he was in jail.

L-G created unelected machinery of governance: Delhi govt to Supreme Court

The Delhi government has told the Supreme Court that Lieutenant Governor (L-G) has de facto created an unelected machinery of governance that runs parallel to the elected government of NCT of Delhi and the L-G's office has derailed the governance in the national capital.

In an affidavit before a constitution bench, which is hearing the power sharing between the Centre and the Delhi government, the Delhi government said: "First, the L-G has de facto created an unelected machinery of governance in the NCT that runs parallel to the elected government of NCT Delhi; second, the L-G has consistently stalled and impeded the functioning of the elected government of NCT of Delhi, by exercise of powers of veto and non-concurrence that do not constitutionally vest in him."

Delhi deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the affidavit said that effecting a parallel machinery of governance by taking unilateral executive action amounts to direct and unconstitutional usurpation of the power of the council of ministers.

Highlighting that 'One Nation, One Election' is for the legislature to decide, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Wednesday noted that the commission can handle the decision administratively.

"This definitely involves a whole lot of logistics, a Whole lot of disruption, but this is in the legislative regime ...so this is for the legislature to decide," Kumar said.
