UN chief says G-20 didn't meet his climate hopes

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is giving a mixed verdict on the climate change agreements reached at the Group of 20 summit, saying he hopes for more ambitious commitments to be made at the United Nations climate conference in Glasgow.

G-20 leaders agreed during their two-day meeting in Rome on ending financing for new overseas coal plants but did not set a specific year for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Maharashtra sees 1,172 cases, 20 deaths

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 1,172 new coronavirus positive cases, which raised the infection tally to 66,11,078, while the death of 20 patients pushed the toll to 1,40,216.

A total of 1,399 patients recuperated and were discharged from hospitals during the day. With this, the state's recovery count reached 64,50,585.

There are 16,658 active cases in Maharashtra at present.

The state's COVID-19 recovery rate is 97.57 per cent and fatality rate is 2.12 per cent.

Will take up vaccine shortage during interaction with PM: Uddhav Thackeray

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday expressed concern over what said was a slow pace of coronavirus vaccination in the state, adding he will take up the issue during an interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week.

Thackeray also said vaccine hesitancy was also an issue besides the unavailability of vaccines and asked more and more people to shed their inhibitions and get vaccinated.

Tamil Nadu logs 1,009 fresh Covid-19 infections, 19 fatalities

Tamil Nadu recorded 1,009 new Covid-19 infections pushing the tally to 27,02,623 while the death toll mounted to 36,116 with 19 more fatalities, the Health Department said on Sunday.

Recoveries eclipsed new cases with 1,183 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 26,55,015 leaving 11,492 active infections, a bulletin said.

A total of 1,23,701 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of specimens examined to 5,11,59,242.

Goa sees 23 Covid-19 cases, no death; 53 recover

The number of COVID-19 cases in Goa reached 1,78,108 on Sunday after 23 people were detected with the infection, while the death toll remained unchanged at 3,364, an official said.

The discharge of 53 people during the day took the recovery count to 1,74,392, leaving the state with an active tally of 352, he informed.

With 2,361 samples being examined in the last 24 hours, the number of tests in Goa went up to 14,68,399, he added.

Gadkari to arrive in Goa on Mon; will launch missing highway link, telemedicine services

Union minister Nitin Gadkari will arrive in Goa on a two-day visit on Monday and inaugurate a missing highway link as well as telemedicine services at a hospital, an official said.

Gadkari will inaugurate the missing link between Loutolim and Verna on National Highway 566, and then, later, will visit Goa Medical College in Bambolim to commission telemedicine services there, the official said on Sunday.

Schools in Kerala to reopen from Nov 1 in staggered manner, with bio-bubble

After a hiatus of more than one-and-a-half year due to coronavirus outbreak, schools in Kerala are set to reopen in a staggered manner from November 1 starting with classes 1 to 7, 10 and 12 and with COVID protocols, like bio-bubbles in place, the state government said on Sunday.

With 95 per cent of the population who are over 18 years of age being vaccinated with at least the first dose and a reduction in the number of new cases and people undergoing COVID-19 treatment, the state has been able to relax social restrictions, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

In this backdrop, the state government has decided to open schools with utmost vigilance and in a staggered manner, the CM said in a Facebook post.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remembered former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Sunday, saying her grandmother always said no one was above the country.

The leader became emotional during her address at the Congress Pratigya Rally here, which was held on the day that was marked by the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, India's first Home Minister, and the death anniversary of her grandmother.

"Indira Gandhi showed that no one is above the country. She sacrificed her life for the faith which you had reposed in her, and she did not move a step back, Priyanka Gandhi said in her address.

One year of Kisan Rail: Railways gives subsidy of Rs 95 cr, reimbursed with Rs 55 cr

While the Kisan Rail has come as a boon for farmers across the country, the railways has been left with a burden of about Rs 40 crore in the form of unpaid reimbursements from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) for running these trains for a year at a 50-per cent rebate.

From October 14, 2020 to October 10, 2021, the Indian Railways has provided a subsidy of around Rs 95 crore to farmers for ferrying their goods on Kisan Rail trains.

Under the "Operation Greens - TOP to Total" scheme of the MoFPI, a 50-per cent subsidy in freight is granted on transportation of fruits and vegetables through Kisan Rail trains.

Former PM Manmohan Singh discharged from AIIMS Delhi after treatment

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Sunday was discharged from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi after the treatment.

Dr Singh got discharged at 5:20 pm from AIIMS, Delhi. He was admitted to AIIMS on October 13 and was under the observation of doctors since then.

He had complained of weakness, hospital sources had said.

Covid-19: Kerala reports 7,167 infections, 167 deaths

Kerala has reported 7,167 fresh COVID-19 cases and 167 related deaths which raised the caseload to 49,68,657 and the fatalities to 31,681.

Of the 167 deaths, 14 were reported over the last few days, 146 were those which were not confirmed until June 18 last year due to lack of adequate documentation and seven were designated as COVID deaths after receiving appeals based on the new guidelines of the Centre and Supreme Court directions, an official press release said on Sunday.

With 6,439 more people recovering from the virus since Saturday, the total recoveries touched 48,57,181 and the active cases reached 79,185, the release said.

G20 make commitments on climate neutrality, coal financing

Leaders of the world's biggest economies made a compromise commitment on Sunday to reach carbon neutrality by or around mid-century as they wrapped up a two-day summit that was laying the groundwork for the UN climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.

According to the final communique, the Group of 20 leaders also agreed to end public financing for coal-fired power generation abroad, but set no target for phasing out coal domestically a clear nod to top carbon polluters China and India.

TMC will form government in Tripura in 2023 elections : Abhishek Banerjee

All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday claimed his party would form the Government in Tripura in the 2023 state assembly elections.

Banerjee promised to end what he claimed was "BJP's misrule" and said his party follow West Bengal's model of good governance' to deliver fruits of development to the Northeastern state.

Addressing a gathering before the Rabindra Shatabrshiki Bhaban (Tagore Centenary Hall) here, Banerjee alleged that law and order has collapsed in the state and development has come to a standstill ever since the BJP came to power in Tripura. He also termed all poll pledges made by the ruling BJP as jumla' (fake promise) as he claimed these had not been fulfilled despite the party being in power for more than three and half years. They say BJP is a double engine government ... (but) If we compare the reports cards of West Bengal with that of the BJP led government in Tripura and in the centre, we see hardly any developments there (in Tripura and nationally), Banerjee claimed.

Negotiators will push nations to ratchet up their efforts to keep global temperatures from rising by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) this century compared with pre-industrial times.
