Latest News: UK toughens its carbon target before Biden climate summit

The UK government on Tuesday set itself a more ambitious climate target, pledging to reduce carbon emissions by three-quarters of their 1990 levels by 2035.
 
The goal was announced ahead of a virtual climate summit that U.S. President Joe Biden plans to host on Thursday.
 
The new carbon-cutting goal includes for the first time Britain's share of emissions from international aviation and shipping, as well as the emissions produced in the country. Latest News: HC rejects plea of Ex-Kerala Minister against Lokayukta report

In a setback to former state Higher Education Minister K T Jaleel, the Kerala High court on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by him seeking to stay the Lokayukta findings that he had 'abused' his position as a public servant to obtain a favour for a relative.
 
A division bench of Justices P B Suresh Kumar and K Babu dismissed in limine the plea, observing that there were no procedural lapses from the Lokayukta as alleged by the petitioner.
 
It said the Lokayukta report was furnished after examining all the files and documents in connection with the appointment of his kin as general manager in a state financial institution. (PTI)

Latest News: Icra cuts its FY22 GDP estimate by 0.5%

Domestic rating agency Icra on Tuesday cut its 2021-22 growth estimate by 0.5 per cent on the upper end, as a newer spate of lockdowns and restrictions get imposed in pockets to arrest the rising Covid-19 cases.
 
The agency now expects the economy to grow 10-10.5 per cent in 2021-22, against the 10-11 per cent estimated earlier.
 
Starting with Maharashtra, a slew of other pockets in the country like Delhi have been taking to localised lockdowns to arrest the climbing Covid-19 cases, which derails economic activity.
 
"For Q1 FY2022 (April-June 2021), we had earlier expected a GDP expansion of 27.5 per cent, boosted by the low base. (PTI)

Latest News: EU expands sanctions against Myanmar military, companies

The European Union expanded its sanctions against Myanmar's military leaders and army-controlled companies ahead of a regional meeting to discuss the worsening crisis after army leaders deposed the elected government.
 
The Council of the European Union's latest sanctions target 10 individuals and two military-controlled companies already subject to sanctions by the US, Britain and other governments.
 
It is unclear if such moves are having any impact as the military escalates its efforts to crush opposition to its seizure of power. Myanmar's economy is already in crisis, worsened by the coronavirus pandemic and by the mass civil disobedience movement that arose following the February 1 coup. (AP)

With the government opening the Covid-19 vaccination drive to everyone above 18 years of age, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called a meeting with vaccine manufacturers on Tuesday, ANI reported. During the meeting, scheduled to be held through video conference at 6 pm on Tuesday, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) will make a presentation and also coordinate with all the participants, sources added.

The Election Commission of India has ordered repolling in four polling booths of Assam. Repolling will be held at the polling stations in Ratabari, Sonai and Haflong constituencies today. All the three constituencies went to polls in the second phase of Assam assembly elections on April 1.

Karnataka government would announce strict Covid-19 containment measures in the State today after Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa's meeting with the Governor Vajubhai Vala and leaders of political parties.

The Kerala government imposed night curfew from 9 pm to 6 am from in view of the sharp increase in Covid-19 cases in the state.
