Home Minister Shah assures CBI probe into border firing, as fresh violence hits Shillong

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah has given firm assurances at a meeting held in Delhi of acting on his request for a CBI probe into the "firing by Assam Police" along the states' border.
 
However, even as the meeting unfolded in the national capital, mob anger over alleged shooting of tribal villagers from the state by Assam police spilled over on to the streets of the picturesque hill resort of Shillong. A police bus and a jeep were torched as stones and petrol bombs flew thick and fast.

Meghalaya to provide security to oil tankers after Assam transporters stop fuel supply

The Meghalaya government was arranging police protection for trucks transporting essential commodities and oil tankers that were coming from Assam, officials said on Thursday night.
 
In a letter to the deputy collectors of at least seven districts, Food and Civil Supplies director Pravin Bakshi directed for the arrangement of police escorts to such vehicles after the Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union (APMU) announced that it has stopped transporting fuel to Meghalaya fearing violence.

Jallikattu bears religious significance to state's people; no cruelty to animals: Tamil Nadu to SC

The Tamil Nadu government has told the Supreme Court that bull-taming sport "jallikattu" is a religious and cultural festival that bears a "religious significance" to the people of the state and does not violate the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960.
 
In a written submission filed in the apex court, the state government has said "jallikattu" is not merely an act of entertainment or amusement but an event with great historic, cultural and religious value.

India, Iran agree on continued cooperation on Chabahar port

Police vehicles torched, petrol bombs hurled in fresh violence in Shillong

A police bus and a jeep were torched, and stones and petrol bombs were hurled at police in Shillong on Thursday evening after a candlelight vigil over the violence at the state's border with Assam concluded, a senior officer said.
 
Seven people, including four police personnel, were injured as a clash broke out between the protesters and the police, Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem told PTI

Centre to launch month-long campaign against gender-based violence on Nov 25

The Centre is set to roll out a nationwide campaign on Friday to sensitise women, especially in rural areas, about gender-based violence and make them aware of various institutional mechanism available to help them.
 
'Nai Chetna', the month-long campaign envisioned as a 'Jan Andolan' (people's movement), will be launched by Union Minister for Rural Development Giriraj Singh at an event here to mark the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls.

The Supreme Court has said that people manning the Election Commission of India should not be "yes man" of the government but "independent who can act independently" even if it comes to taking on the prime minister.
