Maharashtra Gram Panchayat election result 2021: About 1.25 lakh candidates on Monday emerged victorious in the Gram Panchayat elections held in Maharashtra last week, the outcome which the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) claimed a "huge win" while the opposition BJP said it had come out stronger.

The counting of votes began at 9 am today. The Maharashtra State Election Commission conducted Gram Panchayat elections for 14,000 gram panchayats in 34 of the total 36 districts in the state. There are 27,920 gram panchayats in Maharashtra. Though the village panchayat elections are not fought on party symbols, panels are fielded by political parties or local leaders. 

Earlier in the day, stones were pelted at BJP workers who were part of a rally attended by Union Minister Debasree Chaudhuri, state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh and Suvendu Adhikari in Kolkata.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee kicked off the Trinamool Congress's campaign for the assembly elections on Monday, announcing that she will contest the polls from Nandigram -- a political gambit aimed at the BJP's Suvendu Adhikari who won the seat in 2016 as a TMC candidate, while also retroceding to the land movement that catapulted her to power.

On the business front, Piramal group emerged the preferred bidder for resolution of the troubled Dewan Housing Finance Corporation (DHFL). The committee of creditors (CoC) of the company are likely to hold a meeting today to discuss on who gets the money recovered from frauds that happened at DHFL.

US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris formally submits her Senate resignation

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on Monday officially resigned from her Senate seat, according to a media report, ending her four-year innings in the the upper chamber of the United States Congress. The move comes two days before the 56-year-old would be sworn in on Wednesday along with President-elect Joe Biden, making history as the first female, first Black and first South Asian American vice president.

Harris,a Democrat, has formally submitted her letter of resignation to California Governor Gavin Newsom, CNN reported, quoting a Harris aide. Harris won her seat in November 2016 and was sworn in January 2017. At the time, Harris was California's attorney general. Newsom has already named Alex Padilla, California's secretary of state, to fill Harris' seat.

The incoming vice president has spoken to Padilla before he comes into office, according to a person with knowledge of the discussion. Harris made history throughout her career, becoming the first Black woman in California to serve as a senator.

Rajasthan reports 165 more bird deaths

With the death of 165 more birds in Rajasthan, a total of 5,295 avians have died in the state so far, officials said on Monday. Seventeen of the 33 districts of the state are affected by bird flu infection. Out of 266 samples from 27 districts, 67 samples have been diagnosed with infection, according to the Animal Husbandry department.

 

On Sunday, 104 crows, 22 pigeons, 19 peacock and 20 other birds died. Since December 25, 5,295 birds have died in the state, as per the department. The Department officials said the migratory birds have not died due to bird flu in any district. At the same time, the state's poultry farms are still safe from bird flu infection.

 

In the last few days, the department had sent samples of birds from Alwar, Bharatpur, Churu, Sriganganagar, Jodhpur, Barmer, Jalore for examination and their test report has come out negative. Reports of Nagaur and Bikaner districts are yet to be received.

About 1.25 lakh candidates on Monday emerged victorious in the Gram Panchayat elections held in Maharashtra last week, the outcome which the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) claimed a "huge win" while the opposition BJP said it had come out stronger.

 

Though the village panchayat elections are not fought on party symbols, panels are fielded by political parties or local leaders. Leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) claimed that the MVA comprising the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress has scored a big win in the polls, counting for which was held on Monday.

 

On the other hand, former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said the BJP has emerged as the single largest party in these elections. Polling for elections to 12,711 gram panchayats was held in 34 of the total 36 districts on January 15. Polling was held for 1,25,709 seats, for which 2,14,880 candidates were in the fray.

ICSI releases CS Foundation 2020, CSEET 2021 results on icsi.edu

The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) on Thursday released the results of CS Foundation Programme Examination 2020 and CS Executive Entrance Test (CSEET) result 2021 on its website - icsi.edu.

 

The exam was conducted on December 26 and 27, 2020 at 149 centres across India, while the ICSI CSEET 2021 was held on January 9 and 10 this year. The ICSI has extended the facility of downloading e-Result-cum-Marks Statement.

 

Results of ICSI CS Foundation 2020 and ICSI CSEET 2021 are available in PDF. The CSEET 2021 result has been released along with subject-wise break-up of marks of each candidate. ICSI also released the All India Provisional merit list for Foundation program. READ ON...

Bird flu cases confirmed in two more districts of Chhattisgarh

Bird flu has been confirmed as the cause of death of three birds in Bastar and Dantewada districts of Chhattisgarh, an official said on Monday.

 

With this, cases of avian influenza has so far been confirmed in three districts - Bastar, Dantewada and Balod, the official from the state's veterinary services department told PTI.

 

Samples of a crow and a pigeon that were found dead at separate places in Jagdalpur, the headquarters of Bastar district, and of a dead crow in Bacheli town of Dantewada were sent for testing to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) Bhopal on January 14. READ MORE...

Tension in south Kolkata after stones hurled at BJP activists during roadshow

Tension prevailed in south Kolkata on Monday evening after unidentified miscreants, carrying TMC flags, hurled bricks and stones at BJP activists when they were conducting a mega roadshow near Rashbehari Avenue and Charu Market area. The roadshow, which commenced at Tollygunge tram depot, was set to culminate at Rashbehari Avenue -- often referred to as the backyard of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

 

According to police sources, as the rally, led by state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh and senior leader Suvendu Adhikari, proceeded toward Charu Market, miscreants threw bricks and stones at the entourage, injuring some of the saffron party activists.

 

Infuriated over the attack, BJP workers chased the miscreants, who by then had fled to nearby bylanes. The saffron camp activists then ransacked a few motorcycles and shops in the area. A huge police contingent was rushed to the spot to control the incensed activists. State minister Aroop Biswas has also reached the troubled area to take stock of the situation.

Media trial hinders justice: HC on Sushant death case coverage

The Bombay High Court on Monday asked media houses to exercise restraint when reporting on suicide cases, saying "media trial leads to interference and obstruction to administration of justice" and amounts to contempt of court. A bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni said the press must avoid discussions and debates relating to criminal investigations, and it should confine only to informative reportage that is in public interest.

 

The bench also held that prima facie some reportage by Republic TV and Times Now in the aftermath of the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput were "contemptuous".

 

The court said it had, however, decided against initiating any action against the two TV channels under the Contempt of Courts Act. The bench said media trials ran counter to the programme code framed under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act. It also passed a slew of guidelines for the press to follow while reporting on sensitive cases.
