President Kovind takes veiled dig at China in R-Day address, says India foiled expansionist move in Ladakh

In a veiled dig at China over the border standoff in Ladakh, President Ram Nath Kovind said on Monday that India faced "an expansionist move" on its borders which was foiled by the country's valiant soldiers and said 20 of them laid their lives in the violent clash in Galwan Valley.
 
In his address to the nation on the eve of 72nd Republic Day, the President said India is committed to peace but its forces are adequately mobilised in a well-coordinated move to thwart any attempt to undermine security and national interest will be protected at all costs.
 
"The past year was a time of adversity, and it came from many fronts. We faced an expansionist move on our borders, but our valiant soldiers foiled it. To achieve this objective, 20 of them had to lay down their lives," he said.

EC teams to visit poll-bound TN, Kerala, Puducherry after Jan 26: CEC Arora

Election Commission teams would visit Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry after Republic Day to take stock of poll preparations as the three assemblies enter the final leg of their respective terms, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said on Monday. He said the poll panel is preparing to conduct elections in four states -- West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Kerala -- and the Union Territory of Puducherry in the near future.
 
"The Commission also spent four days in Assam and West Bengal...After January 26, we shall be going to Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry," Arora said in his address to the 11th National Voters' Day event here.
 
The terms of the legislative assemblies of the four states and Puducherry are ending on different dates in May and June, and polls are expected to take place in April-May.

Latest LIVE news updates: Noting that long-pending reforms have been brought in the areas of labour and agriculture through legislation, President Ram Nath Kovind has said that the "path to reform at the initial stages may cause misapprehensions" but it is beyond doubt that the government remains singularly devoted to farmers' welfare.
In his address to the nation on the eve of 72nd Republic Day, the President referred to the three new farm laws brought by the government against which farmer unions have been holding a protest on Delhi's borders since November 26.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday said that reports about the withdrawal of old series of some banknotes are incorrect. Taking to Twitter, the RBI said, “With regard to reports in certain sections of media on withdrawal of old series of Rs 100, Rs 10, and Rs 5 banknotes from circulation in near future, it is clarified that such reports are incorrect.”

In a major development, the finance ministry today released the 13th instalment of Rs 6,000 crore to the states to meet GST compensation shortfall, taking the total amount of fund released to Rs 78,000 crore.
 
On the international front, the US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to send the article of impeachment against Donald Trump to the Senate today, launching the start of the former president's trial on a chdonaldarge of incitement of insurrection over the deadly Capitol riot.
