Latest news live updates: The BJP appeared on course to retain power in the six municipal corporations, winning 409 of the 474 seats. Congress, the main opposition party, had won only 36 seats. The Congress has not won a single seat in Surat where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a new entrant, made impressive inroads by winning eight seats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the victory "very special" and said for a party that has been serving in a state for over two decades to record such a phenomenal win is noteworthy. He said the results of municipal elections clearly show the unwavering faith people have in politics of development and good governance.

A Delhi Court on Tuesday granted bail to climate activist Disha Ravi in the Greta Thunberg 'Toolkit' conspiracy case. Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana allowed the bail to the accused on the condition of two surety of Rs 100,000 each.

Earlier in the day, Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved the capital acquisition proposals of various weapons/platforms/equipment/systems required by the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.

Farmers of Punjab, Haryana will be devastated by closure of 'mandis': Yogendra Yadav

Social activist Yogendra Yadav on Tuesday said if 'mandis' are closed due to the Centre's new agri laws the farmers of Punjab and Haryana will be ruined as the government would no longer procure their crops, according to PTI. Addressing a 'Kisan Mahapanchayat' organised by United Kisan Morcha in Rajasthan's Sikar district in support of the ongoing farmers' agitation against the agri laws, Yadav exuded confidence that these legislations will be repealed.

 

 

Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and former MLA Amra Ram also attended the 'mahapanchayat'. Yadav said the government will not procure farmers' crops if 'mandis' are closed due to the three agri laws enacted by the Centre. If that happens, the farmers of Punjab and Haryana will be devastated. He said 450 farmer organisations have come together against the farm laws.

 

 

"Despite all efforts of Modi, his courtiers and leaders in the last three months, not one of these 450 organisations has broken away," he said, as per PTI. Yadav expressed confidence that the agri laws will be repealed and farmers will be able to get a legal guarantee from the government on minimum support price (MSP) -- two of the main demands of farmer unions who have been protesting these legislations for nearly three months now.

The Supreme Court Tuesday cautioned a law student not to address the judges as Your honour as it was not the US Supreme Court.

 

When you call us Your Honour' it appears that you have the US Supreme Court in mind, a bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian told the law student.

 

He immediately apologised to the bench and said that he would address the court as Your Lordship. To this, CJI Bobde said: Whatever, but don't use inappropriate terms. UP farmers to observe fast, send messages to PM till demands are met: Farmer leader

Five farmers from each Uttar Pradesh village will fast for eight hours daily and send messages to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking withdrawal of the three farm laws and legal guarantee for MSP, Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan (RKMS) president V M Singh said on Tuesday.

 

The RKMS had withdrawn its support from the ongoing farmers' agitation against the three contentious central laws following the violence in Delhi on Republic Day. It joined 21 other farmer outfits on Sunday to form the Uttar Pradesh Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (UPKMM).

 

"Five farmers from each village in Uttar Pradesh will observe a fast from 9 am to 5 pm. At 3 pm, these farmers will record two-minute messages, introducing themselves to Prime Minister Modi and sharing their grievances on the new farms laws, which will be uploaded on our website," Singh said at a press conference.

With the BJP set to retain power in six Gujarat municipal corporations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday termed the victory "very special" and said for a party that has been serving in a state for over two decades to record such a phenomenal win is noteworthy. He said the results of municipal elections clearly show the unwavering faith people have in politics of development and good governance. The BJP appeared on course to retain power in the six municipal corporations, winning 409 of the 474 seats where results were declared till evening.

 

"Thank you Gujarat! Results of municipal elections across the state clearly show the unwavering faith people have towards politics of development and good governance," Modi said in a series of tweets. "Grateful to the people of the state for trusting BJP yet again. Always an honour to serve Gujarat," he said.

 

Modi also hailed the efforts of Gujarat BJP workers who reached out to people and elaborated on the party's vision for the state. The Gujarat government's pro-people policies have positively impacted the entire state, he said.

Big setback for Congress as AAP scores in Gujarat civic polls

The Congress, which posed a tough challenge to the BJP in in last assembly polls has been decimated in the 2021 municipality polls as BJP has swept the state, but surprisingly the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has made inroads in Gujarat's urban centres which is a bigger threat for the Congress.

 

In Surat, the AAP has pushed the Congress from second to third position. Congress state in-charge Rajeev Satav did not respond to calls but former Congress President Arjun Modwadia, speaking on the phone from Porbandar, told IANS: "The election results of six municipalities are disheartening for Congress workers in Gujarat. We accept the people's mandate but after every dark night there is a dawn. We will work hard to get the confidence of urban voters.

 

In the last assembly elections it was Surat where all the seats were won by the BJP and this time the surprise package is AAP.

Uttarakhand disaster: 136 missing people 'presumed dead', says official

The Uttarakhand government has issued a notification authorising 136 people still missing after the flash flood in Chamoli district over two weeks ago to be declared "presumed dead".

 

Sixty-eight bodies have so far been recovered after the February 7 disaster. There is a tunnel in which around 35 people are suspected to have been trapped, but rescuers have not been able to reach it till now due to the sludge. Authorities say clearing the debris from the tunnel could take months.

 

A glacial lake was formed upstream of Tapovan over Rishiganga following the devastating flash flood which had demolished a 13.2 MW hydel project along the river besides causing extensive damage to the NTPC's Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project along Dhauliganga. READ ON...
