Liquor baron Ponty Chhadha and elder brother Hardeep were reportedly killed in a firing by unidentified assailants that took place on their farmhouse in Delhi on November 17.
According to television reports, the two brothers had called a meeting to resolve certain property issues when the incident took place. The police are now questioning a security guard who was injured in the attack.
Chadha, who maintained a relatively low profile and was known to shy away from the media, has been in the news for alleged using political influence to build a business empire that is said to be worth at least Rs 6,000 crore. The Wave Group, under which he operates, is engaged in the business of distilleries, multiplexes (Wave Cinemas), real estate, sugar and paper manufacturing, among other activities.
Chadha was also known for his ability to further his business interests irrespective of who was ruling the state of Uttar Pradesh. When the Samajwadi Party was in power in 2005, the liquor baron won contracts to supply ready-to-eat meals for underprivileged children across the state. And when UP came under Bahujan Samaj party's rule, he consolidated his liquor business and established a monopoly over the state's liquor trade.
Several of his dealings have been investigated by the Income Tax Department. Soon after 25 properties owned by him in the National Capital Region and Uttar Pradesh were raided this February, Chadha reported 'undisclosed income' of Rs 175 crore and paid Rs 54 crore as tax to the department.
