Live news: Reactions come in to the government's unexpected decision to help reduce petrol and diesel prices.

Live news updates: The government cutting excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 a litre and on diesel by Rs 10 a litre could reduce the consumer price index (CPI) inflation rate by up to 0.30 percentage points. On the other hand, the measure could cost the government around Rs 60,000 crore this fiscal year.

The duty cut is bleeding fuel pumps though. Having stocked up on fuel ahead of Diwali expecting higher sales, petroleum dealers are now staring at significant losses because of the sudden cut.

Pfizer Inc. said Friday that its experimental antiviral pill for Covid-19 cut rates of hospitalization and death by nearly 90 per cent in high-risk adults, as the drugmaker joined the race for an easy-to-use medication to treat the coronavirus, the AP reported. Currently most Covid-19 treatments require an IV or injection.

Thousands rally in rainy Glasgow

Thousands of protesters set off from a Glasgow park Saturday to march through the city hosting the U.N. climate conference and demand bolder global action, Reuters reported

 

Students, activists and climate-concerned citizens bundled up against the damp cold, linking arms as they moved west from the city's Kelvingrove Park toward the central George Square.

 

Carrying red flags and banners reading "Capitalism is killing the planet," an energetic crowd of youths - some with bullhorns - blamed companies for the climate crisis and chanted calls in favour of socialism while punching their fists in the air.

 

Elsewhere in the crowd, dozens of Scottish national flags, waved in the wind. Still others called attention to climate justice and vulnerable farmers.

Russia reports 1,188 deaths from Covid in past 24 hours

Russia on Saturday reported 41,335 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, its highest single-day case tally since the start of the pandemic.

 

The government's coronavirus task force also reported 1,188 deaths related to the virus.
