People of Manipur and I want AFSPA to be lifted: CM N Biren Singh

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday said the people of his state and he himself wanted the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act to be lifted but added that it should be done with consent of the Centre. Underlining that national security is top priority, Singh said, "We are a border state and share an international border with Myanmar. I have to see the national interest as well."
 
Ahead of the assembly election in the state, there has been a growing chorus for the withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA.
 
"The people of Manipur, including me, want that AFSPA should be lifted, but after a mutual understanding with the central government as national security is the first priority for us," Singh told PTI in an interview.

Covid cases in Delhi drop below 10,000, positivity rate 13.32%

Delhi on Sunday reported 9,197 fresh Covid cases and 34 deaths, while the positivity rate dropped to 13.32 per cent, according to data shared by the health department.
 
The health bulletin showed 69,022 Covid tests were conducted in the capital the previous day.
 
The number of daily cases in Delhi has been declining after touching the record high of 28,867 on January 13. It has taken just 10 days for cases to drop below the 10,000-mark. Delhi on Saturday recorded 45 deaths due to Covid, the highest since June 5, and 11,486 cases with a positivity rate of 16.36 per cent.

14,112 fresh coronavirus cases, 19 more deaths in Rajasthan

Rajasthan on Sunday reported 14,112 fresh COVID-19 cases and 19 more deaths due to the viral disease, according to a health department report. Jaipur reported the maximum number of cases at 3,666, followed by 1,177 in Jodhpur, 780 in Alwar and 669 in Chittorgarh, the report stated.
 
Of the latest deaths, two each were reported from Bikaner, Dausa, Jaipur, Jhalawar, Jhunjhunu and Jodhpur, and one each from Ajmer, Barmer, Bharatpur, Bundi, Kota, Tonk and Udaipur, it said.
 
There are 93,442 active cases in the state, it added. So far, 11,29,902 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Rajasthan. Of these, 9,095 people have died and 10,27,365 recovered.

Good Glamm Group, a content-to-commerce conglomerate, on Sunday said it has acquired a majority stake in beauty and personal care brand Organic Harvest, for an undisclosed amount.
 
Good Glamm will invest an additional Rs 75 crore in growing the brand.
 
The transaction marks the foray of Good Glamm Group in the organic BPC category, according to a statement.

Mumbai sees 2,550 new COVID-19 cases, 13 fatalities

Mumbai on Sunday reported 2,550 new coronavirus positive cases, taking the tally of infections to 10,34,833. The death toll rose to 16,535 after 13 more patients succumbed to the coronavirus infection, the city civic body said.
 
A statement from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's health department said that 84 per cent or 2,142 of the 2,550 new patients are asymptomatic. It said 337 more patients were hospitalised of whom 40 are on oxygen support.
 
The percentage of occupied beds out of the total beds available in Mumbai is 10.6 per cent, it said.

High-level enquiry ordered into derailment of goods train in Mathura

A high-level enquiry has been ordered to probe the derailment of a goods train in Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Sunday. Fifteen cement-laden wagons of the Ghaziabad-bound freight train had derailed on Friday night between Bhuteshwar and Vrindavan Road Station of the Mathura-Palwal section.
 
It would be a high-level enquiry and has been ordered by the headquarters, North Central Railway spokesperson Shivam Sharma said.
 
The enquiry would be led by Principal Chief Safety Officer M K Gupta, and it would also recommend the ways to avoid such incidents in future. Meanwhile, rail traffic on the Mathura-Palwal section has become normal in a little over 24 hours, Sharma said. Train movement on the down line started at 11.37 pm on Saturday, while on the up line, it became normal at 12.53 am on Sunday, he said. Over 300 men under the supervision of senior officers and engineers worked continuously to clear the tracks.

In an apparent swipe at previous Congress dispensations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that attempts were made after independence to erase contributions of many great people besides India's culture and values, and asserted that the country is now correcting mistakes of the past.
 
Addressing a gathering after unveiling a hologram statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at the India Gate on the 125th birth anniversary of the iconic freedom fighter, Modi also said no power in the world can prevent the country from achieving its goal of building a 'new India' before the hundredth year of independence in 2047.
 
He also exhorted people to take inspiration from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's "can do" and "will do" spirit. He said unfortunately, attempts were made to erase contributions of many great people besides the nation's culture after independence.

Nashik district sees 2,526 Covid cases, two fatalities

Nashik district in Maharashtra on Sunday reported 2,526 new COVID-19 cases, raising the overall tally to 4,49,484, officials said.
 
With two patients succumbing to the coronavirus infection, the death toll in the district rose to 8,782, they said, adding that both the fatalities were reported from the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) areas.
 
So far, 4,24,434 patients were discharged following their recovery from coronavirus infection, including 2,919 on Sunday, officials said.
 
At present, the Nashik district has 16,268 active cases.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the hologram statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate here on Sunday.
 
In order to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and as part of the year-long celebrations, the government has decided to install a grand statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate.
 
Till the work on the statue is completed, a hologram statue of Netaji will be present at the same place
 
The statue, made of granite, shall be a fitting tribute to the immense contribution of Netaji to our freedom struggle and would be a symbol of the country's indebtedness to him.

The grand statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose will inspire democratic values and future generations as he refused to bow before the British, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi while unveiling the hologram statue of Netaji at India Gate on Sunday.
 
Addressing the event today, PM Modi said, "Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose refused to bow before the British. His statue will inspire democratic values and future generations."
 
The Prime Minister also said that the grand statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose who has established an independent government in India, is being installed in digital form near India Gate and soon this hologram statue will be replaced by a big granite statue.
 
After unveiling the hologram statue, PM Modi also conferred the Subhas Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskars, for the years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Live news updates: The Enforcement Directorate is about to arrest Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain as part of the central government’s harassment of the Aam Aadmi Party before elections in Punjab, said Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday, citing sources for his claim.
"We welcome them; they can send any agency--ED, CBI--and arrest anyone they want, including me. We're not afraid as we haven't done anything wrong,” he said in a televised media arrest.

India reported 333,533 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours—a marginal decline since yesterday, said the health ministry on Saturday.

Active cases comprise 5.57 per cent of the total infections and the national recovery rate for Covid-19 has decreased to 93.18 per cent. The daily positivity rate--the percentage of coronavirus tests that return positive--is at 17.78 per cent compared to 17.22 per cent Saturday. The weekly positivity rate is at 16.65 per cent, said the ministry.

The Election Commission on Saturday extended until the end of January a ban on roadshows and rallies in five states but announced relaxations for the first two phases of voting due on February 10 and 14.

The commission, in view of declining coronavirus cases, allowed relaxations for physical public meetings of political parties or contesting candidates for Phase 1 from January 28 and for Phase 2 from February 1. It increased the five-person limit for door-to-door campaigning to 10 and allowed video vans for publicity at designated open spaces with coronavirus restrictions.

ICICI Bank Q3 result on Saturday reported a 25 per cent jump in net profit in the October–December quarter (Q3FY22), aided by lower provisions and an increase in net interest income (NII).  The lender’s net profit in the reporting quarter stood at Rs 6,194 crore, its highest ever quarterly profit, beating Street estimates. Analysts had estimated a net profit of Rs 5,800 crore.
