Burkina Faso presidential election marred by Islamist threat

Burkina Faso voters turned out in their millions for an election Sunday that looks set to keep President Roch Marc Christian Kabore in power, shrugging off concerns over the coronavirus pandemic and the potential for attacks by Islamist militants. 

Authorities had ramped up the military presence to allow the vote to go ahead, although polling was interrupted or didn’t take place at all in some of the more violent regions. In the country’s far east, 244 of 355 polling stations closed early, preventing nearly half of the Burkinabe there from casting ballots.

Netanyahu rival launches probe, testing partnership

Israel's defense minister on Sunday appointed a committee to investigate the government's controversial purchase of German submarines several years ago — a step that further strained his already poor relationship with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
 
The USD 2 billion purchase of the submarines and warships made by Thyssenkrupp is the focus of a sweeping corruption scandal in which seven businessmen, including confidants of Netanyahu, have been named as suspects.
 
Netanyahu, who is on trial for his involvement in three other corruption scandals, is not a suspect in the submarine case.

US President-elect Joe Biden will announce the first of his Cabinet appointments on Tuesday and is planning for a scaled-down inauguration due to the coronavirus pandemic, aides said on Sunday, as he lays the foundation for his new administration despite President Donald Trump's refusal to concede.

Trump slams global climate agreement, Biden intends to rejoin

President Donald Trump railed against the Paris climate accord on Sunday, telling world leaders at a virtual summit that the agreement was designed to cripple the US economy, not save the planet.
 
To protect American workers, I withdrew the United States from the unfair and one-sided Paris climate accord, a very unfair act for the United States, Trump said in a video statement from the White House to the Group of 20 summit hosted by Saudi Arabia.
 
His comments came during a discussion among the world's largest economies on safeguarding the Earth.
 
President-elect Joe Biden, who takes office in January, has said he will rejoin the global pact that the US helped forge five years ago.

G20 says it will strive for fair global access to vaccine

Leaders of the world's 20 biggest economies vowed on Sunday to spare no effort to supply Covid-19 drugs, tests and vaccines affordably and fairly to "all people", reflecting worries that the pandemic could deepen global divisions between rich and poor.
 
The pandemic and prospects of an uneven and uncertain economic recovery were at the centre of a two-day summit under the chairmanship of Saudi Arabia, which will hand the G20 presidency to Italy next month.

Modi at G20 calls for reform in multilateral organisations for recovery

Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 summit on Sunday reiterated the importance of reforms in multilateral organisations to ensure better global governance for faster post-Covid recovery.
 
In his address on the second and final day of the summit, hosted by Saudi Arabia in the virtual format, Modi also highlighted India's efforts for inclusive development through a participatory approach.
 
"Was honoured to address G20 partners again on the 2nd day of the Virtual Summit hosted by Saudi Arabia," he tweeted.
 
"Reiterated the importance of reforms in multilateral organizations to ensure better global governance for faster post-Covid recovery," Modi said in a series of tweets on his address at the summit of the world's leading 20 economies.

AIMIM to take call on West Bengal polls after talks

The All India Majils-e-Ittehadul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) would hold deliberations with its party leaders in West Bengal oncontesting the polls in the state, party chief Asaduddin Owaisi said here on Sunday. To queries on AIMIM contesting the next Assembly polls in West Bengal, the Hyderabad MP told reporters that the party is holding a meeting with the West Bengal unit.

PM Modi bats for ISA, says it will contribute to reducing carbon footprint

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the International Solar Alliance would help in reducing carbon footprint and called it the fastest-growing international organisation with 88 signatories.
 

Speaking at the G20 summit virtually, Prime Minister Modi said, "We will meet our goal of 175 GW of renewable energy well before our target of 2022. We are taking a big step ahead by seeking to achieve 450 GW by 2030."

TN governor to decide on remission to convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case: CBI to SC

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has told the Supreme Court that the Tamil Nadu governor has to take a call on the grant of remission to Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict AG Perarivalan, who is serving life sentence in the case.
 

In its affidavit filed on November 20, the CBI said that Perarivalan is not the subject matter of further investigation carried out by the CBI-led Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA) which is conducting a probe on the larger conspiracy aspect as per the mandate of Jain Commission report.
 

The top court is hearing a plea of 46-year-old Perarivalan seeking suspension of his life sentence in the case till the MDMA probe is completed.

PM Narendra Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone of rural drinking water supply projects in Mirzapur and Sonbhadra districts of Uttar Pradesh via video conferencing. Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, who was also present on the occasion said:  "In 70 years drinking water supply projects could be regulated only in 398 villages in Vindhya region. Today we are here to take forward such projects in over 3,000 villages of the region."

The projects will provide household tap water connections in all rural households of 2,995 villages and will benefit about 4.2 million population of Mirzapur and Sonbhadra districts.

The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh has decided to set up a separate "cabinet" for the protection and promotion of the cow, and its members will be drawn from multiple departments, according to CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The first meeting of the "gau cabinet", said to be the first such body in the country which will have the chief minister among its members, was held on Sunday at a cow sanctuary.

On political front, BJP ally Bodoland People's Front's founding member and MP Biswajit Daimary, who resigned from Rajya Sabha on Saturday, will join the saffron party today.

Meanwhile, the written examination for recruitment of sub-inspectors in the Assam Police, which was cancelled due to the leakage of question paper, will be held today. Examination to recruit 597 sub-inspectors was cancelled on September 20, minutes after it began, as the question paper was found to have been leaked on social media.
